On my road trip deep into the South Carolina countryside yesterday on a hot Saturday afternoon, I stopped in a small town to photograph once again this abandoned house near downtown. What an elegant and prosperous home it was at one time.
Retired from careers in journalism, teaching, and information technology. True passion is landscape and flower photography, gardens, walking, sunsets, good books, my iPad....
John my home was in this state when we purchased it. It was built in 1870 and the family that owned it before us was trying to renovate it on their own. Unfortunately the wife became ill and their dream was lost. No front steps. All horsehair plaster removed and on the floor. Holes in the floor. It was a leap of faith. A book was written about growing up on my home called American Girl by Mary Cantwell. It is a great read.
@pickerandagrinner Louis, it's so very admirable that you went to all the effort to fix up the old house you bought. It's something I would love to do, but would have to hire out the helpers. Not a fixer upper myself. It's always extremely gratifying when old, abandoned houses are saved.
Even though abandoned, it is still a beautiful structure! I always enjoy seeing second-story porches; it is fun to imagine sitting in a comfy chair on one and watching the world go by.
It's amazingly well kept outside. There are many places in the rural south where making a living as an outsider would be virtually impossible. It is a shame, but a sign of the times. Individual effort is often un-rewarded. Great shot, it tells a poignant story.
