.........outside Wheal Martyn Country Park......whole families worked here, including women and children....from about age 12. There was a 'social side' too......many held Sports days with races, tug of war, and Cornish Wrestling. There was often a band attached and a choir and often Feast days too, where everyone donned their best clothes and hats and had a day out. Very hard, and often dangerous work...but very supportive it seems.
@sangwann Very much so. Although by the late 1800's there were many steam powered pumps and lift equipment...........so much was still done manually though.
@briaan Thank you. The area we live in (mid Cornwall UK) is surrounded by China Clay mines and engine houses. Copper and Tin were mined here too. Most of the mines are long disused now but we have Lithium here and that is used in the batteries for electric vehicles.......so maybe another mining age beckons.
