Pongam tree by danette

Pongam tree

As long as I am on the subject of trees...might as well include the huge Pongam in my front yard. It is a beautiful speciman of a pain-in-the-neck tree. Not only does it drop buckets of leaves twice a year but it grows many thousands of tiny flowers (also twice a year). We have to sweep the walk twice a day to keep it under control and that's even after the tree trimmers cut it back some from the walkway. We did save this tree after Hurricane Wilma. Thought we had lost it. There is even a huge gash in the trunk. We actually watched it sway back and forth and I can't begin to tell you how large the trunk is. Anyway, I think the stripes on the trunk are cool.
Sounds like a tree that's meant to be! Nice capture.

Beautiful textures and tones of color! Glad it survived the hurricane. It's a great shade tree in the summer, isn't it?

If that tree could talk, the stories it would tell! It's a handsome tree!

Lovely tree picture. This is one cool tree. Great colors and textures. I don't think I have seen a Pongam before seeing this one.

@lynnb Thanks, Lynn! It's been wel cared for.
@marlboromaam Maggie, it does have so many colors and textures it actually provides shade year round. It drops leaves when it buds out.
@clmiller Caren, so true!
@pjonas Thank you so much, Patty! Trees can be so cool.
@daisy Thanks, Kathryn. I believe Pongams are from Australia maybe. Probably only grow down here. They are not a well loved tree as they have many issues. We have taken good care of her whereas most people just let them grow. It is the est specimen I have seen or it would have been gone after the hurricane.

It looks massive! I can't imagine it swaying in the storm and fearing for anything it might land on!

@ariel817 It is massive. Scary watching it rock! We were fortunate not to have it fall!

This is very interesting trunk. Those stripes are great. It is scary to have big tree next to the house in a huriccane zone.

@bardejov Thanks so much. Yes, it can be scary. Our street lost most of the trees. It is why we spent a lot of time grooming ours back to health.
