Located in Micanopy.
"The original house that is known today as the Herlong Mansion was originally a simple “cracker style” pine farm home built circa 1845. It was a two-story affair with a detached kitchen built by one of the original settlers of Micanopy. The site of the mansion was along an Indian trading route, now known as Cholokka Boulevard. Zeddy Clarence Herlong came to Micanopy and settled into the farm house with his wife, Natalie Simonton, after his home and business had burned down in Alabama. He became involved with the local lumber industry whose operations generated the wealth necessary to remodel the once humble farm house into the grand style of the mansion today. By 1910, the original farm house structure was “fully encased within a brick classic greek revival imitation of a southern colonial design”. The Herlongs raised six children in the home but after Natalie passed away ZC remarried and moved to Blackrock SC with his new bride, Marie Rosborough. The building sat vacant until a young couple bought it in the 1980’s and turned it into a Bed and Breakfast."
Enjoyed your narrative giving the background of this charming old home with so much character. Is it still a B & B? I would stay there if a small pet is allowed.
@danette Thanks, I just checked and pets are $35 extra per night, which is normal but they have to be 10 lbs or under and crated. Well, Daisy is about 5 inches over that and has never been crated. She has the run of the house but never ever gets into anything. I thought the rates were very reasonable.
Oooohhh....I was hanging onto your every word, hoping to reach those words, "bed and breakfast"! We love to vacation, staying in B&Bs and have always, always!, met the most fascinating people! Once again, this is a gem!
@danette I just looked up Grady House and you're right. It looks fabulous, however although they have 4 dalmations, they do not accept pets at all. Daisy can probably get by with 10 lbs unless they have a scale by the entrance ;-) But I can't imagine her being crated the whole time---how would they know I wonder?
@cimes1 Gosh, the only thing I can imagine is to "protect" other visitors. If the dog is in the room, I can't imagine anyone knowing. Some people are not responsible, unfortunately, and it ruins it for the majority.
