A photo I have been working on for review this month. Theme is planes, trains, and automobiles. This is the hood ornament on an old Chevrolet (Belair?) in Old Car City in White, GA. Thought the plane hood ornament on a car would make an interesting idea. Light is all natural light.
This is really intriguing! Very creative -- as I"m sure you intended, we are seeing a plane come in for a landing, looking DOWN on the plane instead of up. Great graininess.
Oh, this is a clever take on the theme... the textures in the "plane" are great. I wonder how it would look if you got even lower down and shot the ornament from a more "straight on" POV, so that the raised line behind the plane looked like it jet trail? Maybe it is my "line muse" talking to me, though, so feel free to ignore her. :) Very cool shot.
@rosiekerr Great idea. If all goes well, I will be visiting this location by this weekend (depends on my shoulder healing adequately). This is from a place about an hour away!
@888rachel I had another shot that had a sunflare on the tip of the hood ornament. It just wasn't as workable in post processing. I have had a hard time choosing photos for themes this year, and they have not been very well-received. Not that I care so much as I feel that the shots that have been chosen are all very "safe bets" in photography.
@taffy It was hard to keep the grain on the plane and the smooth texture of the car hood (which I amped up). Will see tonight what the judge says. I predict "too much dark negative space" and "odd angle" and not sure what this is (possibly too macro for the theme). It is not clear that the plane is a hood ornament on a car, so the judge would be going off the plane idea solely for theme. I think I way over think things. I have not liked much of the judging this year (not because I don't "win") but because the analyses are rarely based on theme and execution. Oddly, the title seems to play into the reading of the photo a lot, which I don't think should drive the analysis.
@taffy And please ignore the typos in the previous message. Because I am a teacher of English, and specifically teach effective composition, I should spend more time on correcting my commentary problems (typing too fast). :)
@darylo No worries on the typos...I'd call it 'keeping priorities straight'! Re the judging...please let me know what s/he says. I'm curious as I think the dark space is critical to the idea of 'incoming' and maintaining the mystery. I also think the shape so clearly suggests a plane that it would be hard to miss, even without the title. Good luck!
