The Last Few Yards

The ascent to Clingman's Dome observatory in the Great Smoky Mountains is pretty tough, and I took shots of folks rounding the corners in the last few yards before hitting the rotunda at the top (where I am positioned). You can see the mountains in the background and the foggyish stuff in the beautiful vista.

That's Pollution. The National Parks are working diligently to curb pollution, and I believe at this area on Clingman's Dome there is an monitoring station. My state senator recently made a snide comment about Obama and John Kerry thinking that Climate Issues should be treated with the same intensity as those of terrorism. As I read another headline in the US of a mass shooting, I feel like a tiny speck in the world, wondering why this country cannot stop kicking its self while it's up or down. I've never been so depressed about my own children's futures.

Meanwhile, I'm thankful for the National Parks. I'm thankful for those organizations who strive to make the world a better place. I'm thankful for people who refuse to bow to the pressure of fear. I'm not going to bow. I will keep writing my representatives, but I see a very dark future ahead for my country. And one that never needed to happen ever. Here endeth my musings of a middle-aged-depressed American 50-year-old. I'll remember the triumph of ascending a steep path and knowing that these last few yards led me to a glorious 360 view (pollution, dead firs, and all).
Love this. Wonderful textures!

It also looks a tough unfriendly surface if you had a tumble!

@quietpurplehaze No running after the very steep climb to get on this observatory! But I almost fell over taking the shot!

Great to see a slightly different perspectiveof those mountains in the distance.

I imagine our parents or grandparents felt much the same as you do about the state of the country and how we were all going to H... In a Hand Basket. It is a good thing that people have concerns and work to correct the causes as best they can. Try not to despair

That's saying it. I've never been so depressed about the world we live in before
