Basically turned off the lights in the bathroom so that there was no backlight (it's window-less anyway!), then wedged the broom in the doorway so that it wouldn't move (which took a bit of playing around and the hardest part of the setup), then shot through the bristles so that the light from the laundry reflected off everything. Was quite pleased how it turned out.
