How the Western US looked in the 1860's... that's not a typo, I said 1860's

Check out the work of photographer Timothy O'Sullivan (link below). He traveled the western USA as part of a government exploration in the late 1860's into the 1870's.
He used equipment that took several minutes to set up for each shot and each shot required being developed immediately which he did so in a horse drawn covered wagon.

Pretty amazing stuff! Enjoy!

I have bought and sold vintage photography for 25 years. If I knew then, what I know now, I would probably have to build another room just to hold it all. I would not part with them now.

maybe it's my age, or maybe just that I truly appreciate the art of photography so much more now, but I found these photos to be simply stunning. We forget how beautiful this country was/is, and he captured the land and the people so incredibly well.
