Getty Images opens its vaults to social media, bloggers!

March 6th, 2014
Getty has epically changed its original stance of suing the hell out of people online for stealing photos. It will now offer its vault of photos of over 35 million photos FREE as long as you embed their code to give Getty and the photographer credit. This is pretty stunning news and great for bloggers and content creators.

Are you surprised by the decision? How do you feel as a photographer?

I don't think they've been left with much choice, the internet being what it is, and this option only allows for 594 x 465 pixel images to be used, which isn't very big. Seems like a pretty good compromise to me. It gives the small fry a legal route whilst freeing Getty to go after the big infringers who might actually be worth suing.

The BJP article about it is pretty good: http://www.bjp-online.com/2014/03/10-facts-you-need-to-know-about-getty-images-embed-feature/

As a small time family history blogger I'm very happy. People are more likely to read if there are pictures. I've been very careful about only using photos that are off copyright or with permission, or my own. Getty Images won't have a lot that are useful for me, but every once in a while it will be extremely helpful.

@johenn I'm not sure what type of photos you are looking for but I like to use photopin.com. Will probably continue to use it because I don't like that Getty Images frame.

@chriswang Thank you! I'd never heard of photopin.com before but I just looked and it's great! I've read more now about the Getty Images "offer" and don't much like it. Not crazy about the possibilities that the image I'm using might one day disappear without notice; might someday include a display advertisement (outside of my control); or the standard terms of use stuff that if someone sues them about an image on my site I have to pay their legal fees.
