Solar Flare

February 16th, 2011
For anyone in the northern US or Canada...the largest solar flare in years will cause a 30% chance of auroras as far south as Washington DC. I have only seen auroras once many years ago (western PA). Hoping to see something tonight!

With snow heading toward the PNW, Don't think we have a chance of seeing anything but flakes.

I've seen them once in October and it was the most amazing thing I've seen in years. I'd like to think the clouds would clear enough for us to see them again, but I'm not too hopeful. But I will definitely check it out!

Boo clouds.

The effects of this flare won't reach Earth until sometime tomorrow, so in about 24-36 hours will be the best bet. There's virtually no auroral activity going on at the moment so nobody is missing anything. You can monitor the activity and get updates here: http://spaceweather.com/

@marubozo thanks for the link.. been looking for a good site to find info on auroras, & sky info, not in canada of alaska. Have been hoping for years to see them again (saw them when i was three).

There are few times where living in California is less than ideal--this would be one of them. Dang! But am crossing my fingers for clear skies and auroras for all you northerners!!
8-)

@marubozo thank you for the link. I used a site when I went to Alaska and Iceland for predicted activity.

Bri
I know I spend too much time on this site when "That would be awesome for today's picture!" is my first thought. ;)

Being a Southern California girl, I won't blessed with seeing it, but I'm hoping to see some great pictures from those of you who will!

Thanks for all of the info everyone. I went out at midnight and at 2:30 a.m., but it was too cloudy here to see anything. Hope you had better luck than I did!
