Suggestions for starting a website!

April 17th, 2011
Hey everyone!! I am considering setting up a website to sell my photography, jewerly, and other crafts and I'm not sure with direction to take. Some people I know suggested to make a wordpress blog (I really don't want to blog) and others say start from scratch with all the coding.
What are your opinions/suggestions on how to go about doing this?

I use smugmug and like it very much....but you can only sell photography on there, so you wouldn't be able to do the jewelry and crafts. If you use smugmug, you can actually go to godaddy and create your own domain name and use that within smugmug. I am still working on building my site, but seems to be working good so far.

I sell stuff on Etsy.com It could be a starting place for you. Then you could create a wordpress blog and link to your Etsy shop.

Here is my blog

@sevinstitches Thank you, Amanda. I really like the layout of you page. Do you have the free account or the premium?

@katrinacristy This is definately an option also. I really like how people can buy directly from the page. Ahh,, decisions! :)

i've used congo cart its a pretty cheap option but it does the job! its $5 a month to use their e-cart then its all customisable (or you could buy a template)... you'd need to buy ur domain name and hosting and your done i think...
heres the site (examples of the places that use them) http://www.congocart.com/pages/sites
and heres a store that i did the header graphic for lol http://shop.sugarshots.com.au/

@stacisingleton - I use www.wix.com - in their premium account you can set up your own webshop. Great interface, lots of great templates and easy to use.

I have a free account but here is my not so updated website http://www.wix.com/trondlindholm/lindholm-photo

I purchased a template and host with bludomain. you can view my site at www.annecanonphotography.com
Also on www.bludomain.com you can look at other sites that have launched with them. Sites are either $50 or $100 for the template, and hosting fees are also $50 or $100 depending on what you choose.

You can also sell stuff on stock photography sites such as istock but they are pretty strict about what they'll accept. I tried to register with them last year and got refused due to exposure issues on two of my three sample photos I sent with my registration :/
