The Critique Game

November 16th, 2010
Abz
So this is a game intended to boost 365'ers confidence and help improve our photos. What you have to do is look at the LAST person to comment.
- Click on them and look at their MOST RECENT photograph.
- Scroll down to where it says share, copy the image link onto your reply to this game. (This is so everyone else can see the photo which you've commented on as well)
- Then write one thing which you like about the photo and one piece of constructive criticism (how you think the photo could be improved/what you think is slightly wrong with it etc.)

If someone starts by looking at my most recent photo and commenting/giving the constructive criticism the game can begin! :)

Sorry if this has been done before.

@Martin Turon Thanks for starting off! Yeah you're playing it exactly right :) and thanks for your comment, I'll make the signatures smaller on my upcoming photos. :)
November 16th, 2010
It`s a cool shot,I don`t have anything against it,but your signature is too big and reduces visual quality

...I hope I`m playing this right :)

I love this photo, the visual colors and position of the tapes is beautiful, at first I thought they were reflections.
Its hard to point out a flaw or something I would change, perhaps I would suggest making the line of tapes more straight? and not cut the end of the first cassette so we can see its whole body

honestly I think its a great shot and I wouldn't change a thing :p
Good job on making it hard for me to critique haha
November 16th, 2010

Love the depth of field on the water droplets. Only thing I think could improve it would be to have the points in focus off centre(Rule of Thirds).

Otherwise perfect.
November 16th, 2010
@shaundike --- I'm having a hard time with constructive critiquing on this. I like it overall. If anything I might want to see just a touch more shoulder. Only because your body seems to disappear. Depth of field is perfect. Good job.

November 16th, 2010

I'm gonna start with my constructive first since I can't think of a better way than I like it..
Anyways, I think this would have been slightly better if it was cropped, I think there is too much night sky in it.
And I like the angle of the shot, it's interesting but doesn't take away from the cool looking overpass.
November 16th, 2010
@cadair8 --- Thank you! I appreciate your critique and agree with you about the night sky. I had a bit of a struggle on what to do because I didn't want to lose the moon. Moon shots are not easy for my camera. So, I left it in the picture. Five minutes later the opening was closed and the moon was no longer visible. It was gone that fast.

@cadair8
What I like - this is a really fun shot, it honestly makes me smile. The added figures are fun and make it unique.

What I would change - While I like the characters, the photo as a whole feels like it lacks a center of focus. My eye tends towards the one larger character, so i would remove the others and crop the photo around him/her to make it the focal point.

@lala_land - Great idea!

I like the idea of this picture and it fits really well with your caption and the feeling that you're trying to get across. I also like the way that the stuff in the mirror is in focus, which makes it look like everything outside the window is just a blur and yet looking back (through the mirror) everything is standing still. A good reminder I think to look back and see where we've come from

I guess my critique would be that the street sign outside the window is a little visually distracting. Since it is the only thing really with color, my eye is drawn to it, but it's not really the focus of the picture.

@jbatryn

I actually think that this is really cute. It's definitely eye catching and something I've never seen photographed before. Especially at that angle and I think that's what gives the picture such a heart warming quality.
The only thing I'd suggest (if possible, although I don't think it is since you're shooting with a P&S) would be to have a bigger aperture.
Asides from that, one more thing- play around with the lighting in the picture, it looks kind of flat, you know what I mean?

Nonetheless though, I really like it. It's really cute!
November 16th, 2010
@jbatryn - thanks for the feedback. I agree it would look better without the street sign, the only problem being that i couldn't edit out the street sign without loosing the blur of the passing car. I tried for that shot for about 30 minutes and that was the best I got.....oh well next time I'll make sure the sign isn't around.

@parisouailleurs

I really love the lighting. It looks like it's at golden hour (the time of day right before sunset when the sun shines the brightest) which is my favorite time of day to take pictures. I don't really have much criticism but continue to play with the lighting and the time of day!
November 16th, 2010

This is a great photo. I like the sense of place here. It looks like either snow or rocks in the background. The very short vegetation tells me it is either hight altitude or northern climate. I like the color combination. The sun flare is nice. If it were me (and this is just personal preference) I would like to get one thing in really good focus. This is hard and I often take many bad pictures before I can accomplish this. I would probably also darken the contrast some.
November 16th, 2010
@omabluebird Susan, I love the detail and abstractness here. My only critique would be the lighting. It's sort of dark-doesn't "pop".

"Glorious Sunrise"

@ Jennifer B. - What an amazing hue you've captured. The deep copper tones, the rich black silhouettes, it's a truly striking image. I get a real sense of remoteness, as though you've travelled to some outback dusty town.

My only criticism is the power-lines in the bottom right corner of the image. They take away from that sense of wilderness and draw my mind back to suburbia. Nothing Photoshop can't fix ;)
November 18th, 2010
@bink Thanks David!
I hope to have photoshop soon (and figure out how to use it!) so I can take care of that!
This was taken on my way to work, about 1.5 miles into my 25 mile commute.
November 18th, 2010

I'm struggling to find some criticism with this photo, so ermm, maybe just carry on experimenting with the focal point in your photo's and some lighting as well!
November 19th, 2010
@koalalaabear

Thanks Karla :) The focal point did give me a lot of grief actually. I had the camera on a tripod and I was pressing the button myself. I also had to rely on auto-focus.

Originally I tried taking the shot at F/1.4, but it was impossible to get the auto-focus to hit the mark on the beetles head. Eventually I found a happy trade-off at F/3.2, which is what this photo was taken at.
November 19th, 2010
@bink
Yeah i could imagine the hassle it would have caused! well it may of been tricky but it paid off very well! (:
November 19th, 2010
@stefanieneves Thanks for the comments. I agree that the lighting is not that great and none of the colors really pop. But it was a very overcast day, so it made it harder to get good lighting naturally. And yes, unfortunately, my p&s doesn't have any real manual settings, so I'm not able to play around with aperture. I'm hoping to learn more about that stuff though for when I get a dSLR!

@rossco088 I'm sure it wasn't easy and what you got is certainly not bad. :)
November 20th, 2010

Karla-
Really interesting light effect resulting from the direct sun shot. I like the depth of blue in the sky above, but also wonder if it wouldn't have been good to see a little more of the building silhoutted in that sunburst.
November 22nd, 2010
@rnardino I really like this shot, and all I could think of was maybe focus on the bird a little more? Other than that, it's a great shot! Hard to think of anything to fix it.
November 23rd, 2010

I really like this photo. My only criticism is the line created by the table edge leads the eye away from the bracelet.
November 23rd, 2010

Cool shot of this light fixture! If I could change anything, it would only be cropping it until it was perfectly symmetrical.
November 24th, 2010

I probably should have waited for someone else to crit, Leah, but I keep putting off joining this thread simply because I'm so tired these last few days.

I love the shallow focus on Nibbler and his bowl (love Futurama), and how the characters form a diagonal line thus creating a more interesting composition. Even the white balance, being that little bit warm, helps add a sense of feeling to the shot, giving it a context somehow.

The one thing I think that's missing is a little punch. I think a basic curves adjustment layer would really make the image pop. Maybe some more sharpening. But then, the way this site compresses files, I'm really reaching to suggest even that much. It's a great, fun shot, and it seems silly to even suggest editing to one as competent as yourself.

@jinximages
This photo is absolutely beautiful, and looks like a picture of an old painting. The way you added the texture is great because it doesn't overwhelm the image at all. (Your wife is super cool too! haha ) I love the fact that the hand looks strong and complements the entire image and symbolism behind the katana sword. I really have no critique except the signature on the top left distracted my eye for a second ;) otherwise amazing Jinx, along with your other photographs
November 25th, 2010
@worldshaker Thank you so much, Sharlotte! :) I find the watermark bothersome too, but I try to make it as unobtrusive as possible. I used to think it was just a matter of playing with it until I got it right, but now I think it will just always be "a little bothersome" to me (and others, it seems). Not sure what to do with it, honestly.
November 25th, 2010

@worldshaker I really like this shot, and how you see the little island of light in the otherwise black shot. However I would personally like to see the lighted area a little more towards the center of the shot, perhaps this shot would benefit from a little cropping of the right and bottom so there is a little more balance in the shot.
November 25th, 2010
@harvey
thank you! :) I'm glad someone finds it somewhat interesting I just took the picture to have a photo for yesterday! and I agree completely I was contemplating that when I was cropping the shot, I should have cropped more like you said! thanks! :)
November 26th, 2010
like it all
November 26th, 2010
@jinximages futurama is awsome
November 29th, 2010

Nice creative shot by Mae.

I think the only critique I can make is to carefully consider the background to your shots. That 'thing' on the mid.lower left hand edge of the shot just draws my eye towards it and gets me to wondering just what it is, detracting from the shot itself.

This is a very general point and something we should all bear in mind at all times.

Again though...nice idea & shot! :)

What I like about this photo - I really the colors and contrast you've captured, the blend of light and dark greens is very nice.

What I would change - The left hand side of the photo has tension, specifically the one large leaf that is cut in half about 2/3 of the way up, i would suggest cropping to either leave the tip in the photo, or much further down the leaf so that your eye doesn't follow it.
November 29th, 2010
@rossco088 Thanks for the tip [no pun intended] Ross. I always find the 'where to crop' decision a difficult one.
November 29th, 2010
@nodecaff - it's a tricky choice, not to mention two different people will see it two different ways :)
November 30th, 2010

I absolutely love this picture! I love the way it's focused on the paw. And frankly, I'm pretty much a noob, and I don't really see anything to criticize. So that's that.
December 4th, 2010
I'll start by saying that no-one needs to to crit me - there is a new thread in the general section where you're probably better off going now. I just didn't want Callie to miss out by being the last one here.

I like the muted tones, but they might be just a little too muted - I think the shot is a little underexposed. Sometimes it pays to check the photo, and then dial in an adjustment, +1/3 or +2/3 probably would have done this shot a lot of good. The perspective is great, and I like how the log barrier makes for an interesting leading line. The only thing is, I'm not sure that the in-focus part of the shot is the most interesting part, though that is totally subjective. The sticks(?) in the foreground I find a bit distracting - although they help frame the image, because they are so out of focus and indiscernible I think think they are more of a distraction than useful element. I think Callie has much stronger images in her gallery than this, and it is probably just bad timing that I did this today. Not that it is a bad image, but it really doesn't show off Callie's talent like her other recent work.
