Any Advice for a Beginner?

July 12th, 2011
I've been taking a lot of photos recently and getting some good shots (I think), however, hardly anyone has viewed my photos (let alone left me any feedback) thus far so I could really use some thoughts on my shots! Here are two photos that I want to edit a bit more, any tips on what I should do with them?

Please stop by and check out some of my photos, I will improve the most with your feedback!

They are nice shots...but I would either clone the car out of the second one, or retake the shot. The car is very distracting IMHO. Will go and check out the rest of your stuff :)

I am an ameature that has been taken picture on this project for over a year and 7 months. Some professionals my have better advice then this.

The top photo - if your camera has an exposure lock, try focusing in the sky, lock the exposure and then take the picture. This way your sky will not be washed out.

The bottom photo could have been taken at a different angle so that the house in the back is not washed out.

Hope this helps and welcome. You may want to follow more people to get more advise. That is how I got started.

the problem with any large community is that many people just fly under the radar and no one knows they are there the way to get noticed is start putting yourself out there, follow some people and comment on their pics, add your photos to some of the topics that come up and just generally say "HEY WORLD LOOK AT ME!!!" you do have some excellent shots and I look forward to seeing more ... OK a bit of critique, the first shot the sky is very bright and a little blown out so a bit of the definition on the leaves has been lost although there is not a great deal you can do about this you can get some of that back by decreasing the brightness and slightly increasing the saturation, the man in the background draws attention away from the main subject of the shot so maybe a closer crop would work better, I also think it would make a great black and white shot
photo 2 not a great deal wrong with this the only 2 things that I can pick up are the position of the bell being so close to the subject makes her look slightly cramped positioning the subject an inch or 2 to the left would have improved the shot but not a lot you can do with that post processing, and its a shame about the car in the background the subject has an almost timeless feel except for that, if you have access to editing software that has a clone tool you can clone the bushes behind the car to cover it, but I am just nit picking as you wanted a critique, both shots are good keep it up

It's not that your pictures aren't good because the ones you posted are really nice. A great way to get followers and comments is to comment and follow other people. With so many photos being uploaded all the time it's easy for people to miss some. Also make sure to participate in threads like the browse and pick and also challenges. Another thing we all need to realize is with nice weather more people are out and about and not sitting at the computer.

@looseimages Thanks for your input! These were spur of the moment (unposed) shots so I didn't even think about the background while shooting away. That's something to remember!

@cirasj I failed to mention that these photos were already edited. The top photo was very dark so I brightened it up a bit, I guess I'll decrease that?

Those are great photos. I love the perspective in the first shot. The sky is washed out, but who cares, it's not about the sky! You could look at cropping out the bottom half of the image to focus more attention on the cute face (and would get rid of the man in the background).

@bschoos I think you have some great photos! It would probably be a good idea for you to follow more people, and "fav" more photos. Browse the popular page for some great people to follow, and participate in some of the challenges. Have fun, and keep taking lots of pictures!

I agree @looseimages about the car (although I didn't notice it until she said it!) and I think you could increase the saturation a little bit in that second shot. It's a great shot, I just think it could use a little brighter colors!

@looseimages How do you clone something out?

@kimmistephens I'm assuming @looseimages is referring to the clone stamp tool in photoshop.
