how do you become popular on this website?!
some people have hundreds of followers, but then some people, including me, have less that 20 followers.

are my pictures not good enough? i dont knoww?

Well you're only following 3 people yourself. If you want to get noticed you need to put yourself out there. There's generally two ways to do this, one cool, one lame.

The cool way is to browse the other people on the site, find ones you like, comment on them and if you really like them, follow them. This'll bring you to their attention and maybe they'll follow you if they like what they see. Such as what I just did.

The lame way is to go through every person on here and just follow them anyway in the hope they'll follow you back, whether you like their stuff or not. There's plenty of people on here that do that, but it's more than a bit pathetic.

tl;dr Follow people and they'll follow you. 20 followers to 3 followees is a pretty good ratio, note :)

P.S. your photos show a great deal of creativity, you're doing fine on that front.

Contrary to what Steve says I disagree with the terms cool and lame.Basically have a look at other peoples photos,if their photos appeal to you then follow them, the more you follow the more followers and feedback you will recieve. A good way to find pics that appeal to you is to search the most recent and popular pics uploaded, hope this helps.

Making comments on other people's pictures gets yours looked at too.

You just described my "cool" approach, Kirsty, verbatim :)

Don't worry about popularity - your project is for you, really.

Annie says don't worry about being popular, that your project is for you. I certainly agree and that is undoubtedly how we all started BUT no one can deny the energy we get from daily responses to our offerings. I think that is what makes this community so special. And because our followers are people whose opinions we come to trust, their comments and suggestions are really helpful in planning for future photos. I definitely agree with the others who say follow others in order to get followers. Actually that's a good life lesson. Think about others first and others will respond in kind.

Addendum: On today's popular page is a great portrait: http://365project.org/bernie/365/2010-06-25
Notice that the photographer has 144 followers and is following no one. In her profile she writes her goal is to promote both the rural and urban communities in Bangladesh. Somehow her message was so strong it began to spread without benefit of Bernie following anyone.
I guess she is the exception that tests the rule.

It is definately encouraging to have people tell you you're good at something you enjoy - I just hope people don't think their photos aren't good enough just because they don't have as many followers as someone else.

I don't know how to become "popular" but one of my favorite ways of finding new people to follow is browsing by tag.

Yes it is nice to have a lot of followers and a lot of comments on your daily photo, but there is a downside to following a lot of others. When I was only following a dozen or so members i would only see their pics on my "recent activity" page, but now that I am following eighty people I don't always see everyone's daily pics. In order to see everyone's pics i would have to be on this site for hours and that is not always possible. I miss seeing just a select few that I have followed since the beginning but then I would miss new photos of people I am not following. A "catch 22" for sure.

Commenting on fellow 365ers photos, not just popular ones. It's a great idea to just randomly click on people sometimes and check out their work. I always like interacting with people and learning about them so it's a good way to get followers.
Following people also gets their attention, and leaving lots of nice comments on people whose work you love. Chances are someone might click on your name one of these times.
Submitting work to the weekly theme is another good way, I often browse the theme tags to find new people.
Tagging your work well is a good idea too, as Emily pointed out tags are a great way of finding new people.
Keeping active in the forums is a good way as well.
I often find that if you have a good enough eye for photos, it's a lack of exposure that keeps people from getting "popular" and getting heaps of followers. Keep active and keep working on your photography and I'm sure you'll see an influx of followers over time. Your work is beautiful and it was definitely worth a follow from me. Keep it up.

some people have hundreds of followers because they choose to follow so many people, therefore they are going to get more views and comments on their photos because so many people are following them, but the comments might say 'nice' or something, more of a genenal comment rather than because they truly like the photo. so if you have 300 hundred followers because you are following that many yourself, your pics will become popular because more people are clicking on it.

im not saying its bad having lots of followers, it is flattering. but often you will see people that are popular in 365 are following ALOT of people themselves.

but keep up the good work, and if you want more followers, take the advice of the others and follow more people and be more interactive!
hope you enjoy the rest of your journey :)

Those of you who know me may chuckle at what I'm about to say, but know it's true...take the time to be sincere. If I only have a short while to write a few comments, I'd rather write something about how I connect with the person or the photo instead of contacting a lot of people to flip past the picture and just say, "Nice Shot"... To my way of thinking, the real connection is more important than the numbers.

That said, I'm looking forward to seeing some of your work...
