Hey - it's snowing like mad here right now and I'm just taking my camera out for a little walk with the dogs. I've shot a few shots of the deck, but I'm not super happy with them. What do you think? Flash? No flash? Settings? I tried an uber fast shutter speed but it's just not enough light. Sky's pretty grey at the moment. Help!
I think it depends on the distance to the subject. You might get away with flash as a fill flash if you are a decent amount away but any close ups would probably be washed out.....I took a photo the other day looking up into the snow fall with a flash and it looked like a super macro star shot....it was dark out too though. I agree with @beautifulthing it is so hard to shoot.
other than adjusting your white balance not sure what else to suggest...my little P&S had a snow scene setting and haven't had more than frost yet with the DSLR ;-)
@sdpace Thanks Stacy! It's mostly cityscape I'm shooting, but it's snowing so hard that it's almost whited out all the buildings (love it). I'll take another wander out and try a fast shutter speed with a higher ISO.
Background was without flash, insert was zoomed in and with a flash. The background with flash was washed out by the post to the immediate left of the picture. Of course, the bigger flakes today were photogenic without a flash.
@michaelelliott Just preparing you, my husband finally bought a snow blower this year so I don't think the Northeast is going to get any snow this year!
@egad I predict huge blizzard somewhere around valentines day. Have my hip surgery that day, so murphys law will screw me with the evil bitch called snow
@egad Ah, my surgery is the 14th, but I have all the pre-surgery appointments on the 25th. I will take the odds on that date happening for both of us. Good luck, my friend had to drive to her induction two years ago during the storm right before Christmas.

this is fast shutter - all EXIF is with the photo
this is slow shutter - all EXIF is with the photo
this was a very cloudy cold day, so i used a really high ISO to let all the light in.
@sdpace Stacy, these are great! really love that first one with the snow bokeh! :)
@brumbe I think I showed snow what was up this morning.
