To Catch the Snow

January 16th, 2012
Hey - it's snowing like mad here right now and I'm just taking my camera out for a little walk with the dogs. I've shot a few shots of the deck, but I'm not super happy with them. What do you think? Flash? No flash? Settings? I tried an uber fast shutter speed but it's just not enough light. Sky's pretty grey at the moment. Help!

All I can say is I'm jealous, I can't even remember the last time I saw Snow :(

What is your white balance on??

@beautifulthing auto at the moment

Snow is so hard! All I can think of to tell you to tweak is the white balance. Maybe less aperture and a longer shutter speed too?

I think it depends on the distance to the subject. You might get away with flash as a fill flash if you are a decent amount away but any close ups would probably be washed out.....I took a photo the other day looking up into the snow fall with a flash and it looked like a super macro star shot....it was dark out too though. I agree with @beautifulthing it is so hard to shoot.

I'm with @jasehoad ..... Very jealous!!!! 39 degrees here today AGAIN!

other than adjusting your white balance not sure what else to suggest...my little P&S had a snow scene setting and haven't had more than frost yet with the DSLR ;-)

I've been waiting to shoot in the snow here but it's mid Jan and still no snow - though its 17 F degrees with wind chill close to 0F.

what kind of scene are you trying to capture? i just loaded 2 pics for you - we don't get snow often in Texas, but it snowed a few times last year.

this is fast shutter - all EXIF is with the photo

this is slow shutter - all EXIF is with the photo

this was a very cloudy cold day, so i used a really high ISO to let all the light in.

@sdpace Thanks Stacy! It's mostly cityscape I'm shooting, but it's snowing so hard that it's almost whited out all the buildings (love it). I'll take another wander out and try a fast shutter speed with a higher ISO.

@pwallis can't wait to see what you come up with... always look forward to your snaps!

@sdpace Stacy, these are great! really love that first one with the snow bokeh! :)
January 16th, 2012
@sdpace well cool.. i like them both. fingers crossed fer some white stuff here..

Background was without flash, insert was zoomed in and with a flash. The background with flash was washed out by the post to the immediate left of the picture. Of course, the bigger flakes today were photogenic without a flash.

snow is a bitch. Hope you capture it and show it who is boss.
January 16th, 2012
@michaelelliott Just preparing you, my husband finally bought a snow blower this year so I don't think the Northeast is going to get any snow this year!
January 16th, 2012
@egad Murphy's Law, right?
@brumbe I think I showed snow what was up this morning.
January 16th, 2012
@brumbe ehehehhehe... I feel that pain
January 16th, 2012
@egad I predict huge blizzard somewhere around valentines day. Have my hip surgery that day, so murphys law will screw me with the evil bitch called snow
January 16th, 2012
@brumbe lmao...is that just the way it goes?? I am 9 months pregnant, so if we do get snow, I predict it will be the day I go into labor!!
January 16th, 2012
@egad when are you due, we should schedule our downtime at the same time so there will only be one noreaster this year.
January 17th, 2012
@brumbe Ha ha perfect plan! I am due Feb 4th but the plan is that I am getting induced the 1st. Good for you?!
January 17th, 2012
@egad Ah, my surgery is the 14th, but I have all the pre-surgery appointments on the 25th. I will take the odds on that date happening for both of us. Good luck, my friend had to drive to her induction two years ago during the storm right before Christmas.
