Program mode

I was just wondering what you guys think of program mode. I personally and usually lean towards usually aperture priority on my camera so that I could have more control of the depth of field.

However, what situations would you guys use program for?

Generally if i'm shooting randomly and not trying to be all arty I will use Program mode, because I like to shoot with a low ISO and my camera likes to shoot with a higher than necessary ISO. P mode lets me fix it to 200 or whatever i'm using.

Sometimes I use it as a fake light meter, at least in my mind. I shoot a couple of shots in Program, take note of the settings the camera chose, then move to manual and adjust the settings based on what was in Program and if I want the photo to be more or less exposed. It gives a good quick idea of the aperture/shutter relationship you can use in any given situation.

@sdpace It's a good way of learning doing that isn't it? Especially if you're struggling.

@jlhopgood definitely. i think we all get into lighting situations where we're out of our element...so I'm glad it's there if I get stuck. :)

I use it quite a lot, but it never seems to chose what I want/need, so I tweak it from there.

It's the setting I leave the camera on, so it's 'set up' if I quickly grab it for a shot (I try to remember to set everything back to 'default' when I put the camera away). Otherwise, it depends on what I'm shooting. For macro & studio work, I'm usually on aperture-priority or manual. For outside, it can be anything.

i agree with ross, its what i tend to use the most

It's what I use 99.9% of the time. I"m trying to learn manual mode, but I have two problems. First of all, manual scares me. lol. Secondly, I do a lot of bird shots where it's hard to take the time to set up the settings.

I rarely shoot program. I was brought up manual, and mainly shoot manual. With Digitial, especially with flash, I find it much better. I sold Shutter Priority and Aperture priority cameras back in the early 80's. Didn't get it, then, don't get it now. I don't like a computer making decisions for me. Too many things to think about in this world before the computers take over the Human Race (kidding...they already have)

@sdpace @humphreyhippo Life changing ideas! Amazing, I never thought of this before! How many times did I grab my camera to take a picture quickly and it was all set up for a totally different light situation, so I missed the moment. And money time have I got no idea what to do with light, just never getting it right. :)

@mej2011 Try aperture priority with a set iso, that's what I use most of the time. The smaller the f number the shallowest the depth of field and the more light gets through the lens so the quicker shutter speed will be set automatically by your camera, if the shutter speed gets to low to catch a bird sharp, you need to increase the iso.

@yogibari
Thanks so much! I'll try that tomorrow.

Just a question out of curiosity (newbie to photography as well :D) -- would P then be the 'automatic' equivalent for DSLRs then? :)
