Sigma 70-300mm or Tamron 70-300 mm ?

Hello,

I have a Canon T2i/ 550D. I am planning to get a telephoto lens. While the best option is a Canon lens, since its above my price range, I am looking at Sigma 70-300mm or Tamron 70-300mm.

If you have used either of these lens, how do you like them ? How is the picture quality ? Please post some pics too ! Thanks !

Regards,

I have a 400D and I got the Tamron 70-300mm for Christmas and so far I've been really impressed. The colours are really good and it seems sharper than the 55-250mm Canon lens I've got.

You should also be looking at the F stops and if the speed of the lens is quick enough for what you plan on doing with it.

The tamron 70-300 actually has better glass than it's canon counterpart, has way better close up capability and a six year warranty. Tamrons also always come with a hood which is nifty.

I had the tameron but returned it as the canon is quicker at focusing and has IS stabiliser ideal for low light conditions. On the plus side tamer on has a macro feature (although in all fairness ,I didn't rate it, not a true close up macro)

I have the sigma 70-300 and a slightly smaller Tamron 28-200.

Both are great lenses but I find the Sigma limiting as a walkabout lens (not a problem for you as the ones you are looking at are the same focal lenghts). Picture quality from the Tamron is as good as the Sigma BUT I find that while taking night shots I can get some quite ugly lens flares off that lens.

WEX has the basic Sigma 70-300 for a touch over £100 compared to the Tamron at £130, BUT IMHO if you have the money the Sigma 70-300 APO at £180 is worth the extra.
