Do you ever give yourself a weekly/monthly etc...theme?

February 12th, 2012
I just decided to do a snow (and seemingly shadow theme based on the pics I ended up with) theme last week since we had a big storm & I took a bunch of pics, but I kinda liked the idea despite being sick of snow pics by today haha...so I think I will do it again this upcoming week. I am thinking a pretty general 'things I like/love' for this week's self imposed theme. Anyone else do this? I might eventually need some creative ideas, please share some of yours! I also decided a few weeks ago to do 1 selfie per week, kinda the same thing I suppose.

Samples from last week's snow & (sometimes) shadows:

Icicles were a variation on the theme:

And today's theme relevant selfie:

I post a thing on my bucket list once a week

I just finished a candle/quote series and, shortly before that, a series using marbles.

so far, no... i do have a running list of things i want to do... plus i use the various theme challenges for inspiration...

@rileyhine That's a cool idea!

@debsphotos I definitely want to try some candle shots!

i really like the 2nd one with the patio table - really really nice. I think a lot of people set weekly/monthly goals for themselves, and sometimes they share them with others and we get a group going. For instance, I remember last year in May there were a lot of people who did the full month of selfies challenge. This month there is a small group doing a film challenge where we only post pictures taken with a film camera. Usually around the end of each month you'll see some posts in the forums about challenges for the next month - feel free to start your own or jump on board! :D

I have 2 more days left on my self imposed heart theme. I did the same theme last year too. From February 1 - 14th each shot must have a heart in it!
Here are a few I have done so far:

@sdpace Thanks! I haven't done a weekly group challenge *yet*...but I'm sure I will :) A month (after this week I tried) must seem like foreverty haha, but I am looking forward to looking over the film challenge entries for sure!

@positronicmommy Very cute idea for February!

I have set myself a week challenge before where I asked seven different people their favourite place in our town then I would either take them there to photograph them or simply photograph the place....
here is one from that week

This month I set myself a challenge to only take people photography so that I can better my portraits etc here is my favourite so far....

@kbradbury Those are both great ideas/projects!

Last June I did the gratitude challenge, and in July I did a black and white challenge. I really liked the black and white challenge, it helped me to consider black and white as an option for photos in the future.

Nice pics!
I have thought about a theme week, but haven't tried it yet.

I just did a week I called "Found Beauty Series" - all non-set up, candid shots. This week I'm doing wordless week. I tend to ALWAYS have captions, so trying to not do that.

In the past, I've done A to Z, music inspired, child challenge, ect.

Several members of my family started 365 together in January and have had regular mini themes to keep us inspired. We have recently had a Black and White Wednesday, Spotty (and Stripy) Saturday, Food Friday, and have just completed a Rainbow Week. We are thinking of doing a literary day (or even week) using books/poems as a theme, a Macro Monday.

It is very useful when inspiration is low to have some fall back themes, and it is also good to get my 8 year old son thinking, as he tends to just take photos of the nearest object if he doesn't have any ideas or a theme.

I've joined a movie-challenge last July ( http://365project.org/elke/365/2011-07 ), and I dedicated the whole of August to my son ( http://365project.org/elke/365/2011-08 ), who turned 2 years old in that month

I like doing "private" themes/challenges I did a levitation-around-the-house week in September (inspired by the Monday SP challenge for that week)

A "sixties week" last December... which ended up in a creating digital wallpaper challenge LOL

And I recently challenged myself to improve my birdie-pics in a weeks time, and upload those pics pretty much SOOC (just slight crops and auto tone/contrast adjustments) LOL. I had noticed that I hadn't really tried to capture birds, and with the cold weather they're easier to catch on camera.
well... this was one my first...

and this one of the last I did during that week.

So yes I do like to give myself a challenge or theme, especially when I'm getting less motivated doing pics on daily base ;-)

For my second year I am focusing more on challenges which will allow me to work on skills and opportunities that I did not focus on last year. I felt that I spent too much time looking for a daily photo sometimes and this gives me a lot of focus, but a month is too long to do any one theme or style.

i'm currently working through an A-Z. other than that i've just been joining in with some of the ones being posted on the boards.

I did an "Extraordinary Paperclip" theme for a week:

and will do a "Crystal Ball" theme this week:

@appaloosa05 I like the idea of something more abstract like 'gratitude', requires some creative thinking!

@lolanae I kind of did a found beauty a couple of weeks ago, I was trying to find the beauty in the ordinary things around me since I'm not surrounded by ocean views or beautiful vistas going to & from work every day lol. makes you look at things more creatively!

@harveyzone That's great that you all do that together!! Keeps things interesting...

@elke Those are awesome!! And I have yet to capture any birds around here lol, they are not an easy subject!

@sleepysmurf81 The A to Z sounds intersting...is it a subject that falls into a new letter every day or some set A to Z of things to photograph?
February 13th, 2012
@grizzlysghost Ha, the paperclip bird is great!
February 13th, 2012
Tams you pic's are really cool. I have not done a weekly theme but I had decided I am doing a valentine type theme this week so I posted my first one in my weeks series.
February 13th, 2012
@myhrhelper Thanks! I'll go check yours out, that is a great idea!
February 13th, 2012
@tamsg4 I'm just trying to find something each day that fits that days letter. There is no set list. It's going ok so far!
February 13th, 2012
Tams i am also doing a Love/VAlentine's theme this week this is my first Theme and it has been fun!..I was thinking you could maybe randomly pick a word out of the dictionary or any book or magazine and do a theme on that word! i would like to do all selfies for a week or all my grandchildren and the spring wildflower's...Your pics are great..Have Fun!!
February 13th, 2012
@tamsg4 I did a 'Christmas songs' theme the week before Christmas but otherwise have shot things I have come across. Have decided to make life a bit more challenging and do an Alphabet theme for March (a pretty boring month here)... it has 31 days so how I'll fill the other 5 days time alone will tell....!
February 13th, 2012
When I started mid January most of my pictures were for beginners daily challenges on Flicker. By the time February came I thought this looked itty bitty, so for February I set myself the theme of Light. I'm already mulling a few themes over for the coming months.
February 14th, 2012
@sleepysmurf81 That sounds fun, I'll have to check your finds out!

@ellimae Thanks! And the dictionary idea sounds like a good one! That would be great for a group thing too :)

@filsie65 Christmas songs sounds interesting! At least you have some time to think up the other March things haha ;)

@justeddie Hmmm light is very interesting, I bet that will produce some great results!

Without reading all of the replies, I am giving myself a yearly theme by shooting the place where I'm standing once per day. I haven't uploaded the photos here, but I am keeping them on my blog, and some of the folks here are doing a similar theme as well. Here's a link: http://www.snippetsfromsuburbia.com/?page_id=1222

@snippets I've seen yours before someone posted the link somewhere, it's fantastic I love it!!
