Pinterest and Copyright Infringement

I came across this article and thought some of you might be interested:

http://www.businessinsider.com/commenting-could-keep-pinterest-from-getting-sued-2012-3?utm_source=alerts&nr_email_referer=1

In part it reads:
"When adding an image to Pinterest, ... you're required to enter a caption ... This tiny attention to detail from Pinterest's developers could be the thing that keeps them from getting their butts sued off for copyright infringement ....

The end of the article says:
"The co-founder of Pinterest reached out to that same lawyer that deleted her pinboards, saying that the site is still trying to figure out an elegant solution to its copyright questions.

I just read that article today, Anne! I've been keeping up with the news on Pinterest every day because I have boards for my fav 365er pics. I stopped pinning a few weeks ago until they get this worked out. I always pasted the original link in comments, myself and asked the pic owner for their permission before I pinned. I have also told the owners of these fav pics that I'd be happy to delete any of their pics from my boards should they want me to do that. Pinterest is certainly a hot topic and there's more poison spread with presumption than good with fact. Pinterest will have to clarify their TOS for many users. I have found many professional photographers praise it and some do not. I found Trey Ratcliff's write up very interesting... https://plus.google.com/105237212888595777019/posts/UAvbc2oT3tB

@marlboromaam I really enjoyed reading that Trey Ratcliff article. I like the way he thinks. Thanks for the link.

@sunnygreenwood You're welcome! LOL! He's a great photographer with his own positive philosophy.

@marlboromaam @sunnygreenwood Both are interesting articles.

I agree with Trey. His success and openess has found him notoriety which allows him to be able to make money being sent around the world.

I could only hope at this stage of my photography that I'm commercially exploited :-) I have a friend who is a step up with his photography and makes a little money part time. He has a site where he has client shots locked down with a password, some that are watermarked and thumbnailed for sale. But for the most part, he still posts shots out to public sites like 365 because it is fun and a growth experience.

I say post and they will follow. Worrying is for the lawyers and for those who aren't as good as they think they are. Trey Ratcliff is a prime example.

I read that article too! I love pintrest and while I may love it when someone pins something ive made or taken a photo of thats not always how someone else feels, so I can understand why someone would be mad over it but I dont see the problem with it as long as your being linked back to the photo thats yours. Now there are those people who will crop out your watermark or claim it as their own and I think thats where most of the problems come from is someone taking credit for your work. I hope pintrest gets it all worked out but until then Ill just be pinning my own stuff.

@victorialanette i haven't joined pinterest but i'm interested in how it's going with those who have. It's good to hear that you like it. I also read an article that talks about how people on pinterest are discouraged from posting their own pics, which I don't understand at all. Too bad there wasn't a few more hours in a day and I'd bite the bullet and join to see what it's like.

@sunnygreenwood I joined it for like a month or two, and then completely lost interest. When all the copyright brouhaha came up, I went back and deleted my account. I think it sucks you in and you spend all this time pinning examples of other people's ideas, and you rarely actually DO any of it, because you spend so much time mucking around and pinning. I'd rather focus on my own creativity instead of copying what other people have already done - but that is just my $.02! :)

@beautifulthing Agree. I spent HOURS pinning stuff that i never actually followed through on. Since starting 365, haven't been back.

@beautifulthing @cmc1200 i can totally see that happening to me too. If I do join just to see what it's like, i'll have to set myself a daily time limit! lol

I enjoy pinterest.. My favorite part is creating my own special boards with places I have been and places I want to see while living in California.. But, for some reason I never post my own pictures on there.. I guess with it being pinned and passed along, I would be sad if someone had a negative comment about a place I posted that I thought was amazing.. I may not be a professional photographer, but every click of my camera I am doing it with love.. :-)
