Self promotion?

April 6th, 2012
I am only pretty new to photography I have been doing a bit of work for friends and acquaintances, now I am looking at branching out and trying to make a name for myself but I just don't know where to begin or if I am ready, I was thinking of starting a Facebook page for myself? Just don't know where to begin or how I should go about it... If any more experienced photographers would like to share how they got their start that would be fantastic!

I'm sure @Faust has some advice on this. @Mephistopheles could probably even offer you a job.

Hey Jess - just had a peek through your photos and saw you were in the Vancouver area? Me too! What kind of work have you been doing, portraiture? My advice to you would be to stick it out for a year on this site, post shots of the kind of work you're looking to get into, ask for loads of critique on them, and learn as much as you possibly can while you're on here. Sure if you want to start a fb page, you can, but the only people that are really going to see that at the moment are your friends and family. I would want to get as confident in my skills as I possibly can, and then word of mouth will start working for you. I don't think it's an easy field to break into.

I agree with Paula, if you are fairly new, take lots of time to learn all you can, keep practicing & go for it! Take classes, read books, there is a ton of information online. If you are wanting to do portrait work/family photography, maybe find a photographer in your area & shadow them for a day.
I spent a year doing this project and picking up my camera every day taught me so much about photography, and about ME! I learned what I like to shoot, style, editing, all that. I figured out quickly that I am not a portrait photographer, but I will do it when friends or family ask me. I love to make art that people can hang on their walls. So that is what I focus on. I joined my towns art league to connect with other artist & make contacts in the community, started an etsy shop (or I should say convert my shop to photography from what it used to be) and my biggest step this year has been to join the art walks in my town. Once a month I set up a booth & sell my prints. It's a blast! I took photography classes in school (years ago) but nothing has been as valuble as doing this project.

Why don't you start interacting more on here, following other people's work, and commenting? You will then have more feedback on your own work, especially if you ask for it when you post the photo.

Get out there and get active. Spend your spare time talking with people and taking photos. Practice what you have learned and ask for comments.

Sign up for kelby training and watch them over and over again.

If you have kids talk with the school and be active in the community. Be a photographer is about connecting with people. If you wake art then you still have to be able to connect.

I am more than happy to comment on your or anyone's else's photos. All you have to do is tag me in the comments and I will pop by.

Good luck and feel free to ask questions
