I think I insulted the popular page magic monkeys somehow. I have recently had a couple of photos that are PP worthy (based on faves, comments, views), but they refuse to get called to the big show. If the attached picture doesn't make it, I will know for sure those damned monkeys hate me.
This may also be a test of placement. It was taken and posted on 5 April and the Exif supports that, but I stuck it into an alternate album on 3 March since it was an open space.
Wow that is gorgeous Aaron! I have also had some shots I thought would make PP based on faves and views but never did. I think it may be a luck of the draw kind of thing! LOL!
Thanks guys! If you look at the faves, this one more than doubles a lot of the PP ones, and in less time. I think there is a 3-5 day window in which if it doesn't "qualify" it gets passed over; so we will see in a few days.
I have had quite a few of my shots hit the PP, so I've sort of gotten a feel for what makes it and what doesn't... or at least I thought I did... :)
I'm starting to think it doesn't have a lot to do with views, favs or comments. My C-Section photo was there with 152 views and 4 favs. Mind you it was only there for half a day, where as some pics are there for a week.
I think this pic of yours is stunning, and am going straight there now to Fav it!
@onie Haha, thanks Leonie! I know exactly what you mean about some that stay and some that just flash and go :) Then there are some that return after a short absence. Crazy monkeys! :)
it is a beautiful picture. @onie I could swear your c-section picture was up for longer than half a day! i remember seeing it for 2 at least, (I think). Its an awesome picture by the way.
I have one from this week that I was convinced would make it today but no such luck. There are several up there now with as many favs, views from people with many more followers so Im confused right there with you! Sorry you aren't up there! Wish I could sit those monkeys down and give them a talking to. LOL.
@ladyjane Thanks so much LadyJane! I'm sure you're right, just like the "New Faces" page. While I am still technically a "new face" (I started mid Jan), I have three albums and have been shooting a lot, and as soon as I hit 200 uploads, I was no longer a "new face".
Maybe it also has something to do with how many people are following you as well. The more that follow you, the more "faves" you need to get to be considered.
One of my photos had 20 faves before it ever made the PP, and it got faves rather fast... last I checked, I had 2 photos on the current PP... and one of them only has 6 faves (its my favorite of the 2) and the other has 10. Granted, they won't stay long because they haven't gotten any new faves since making the PP..... but keep in mind that sometimes, the top photos of the week never appeared on the PP.... which makes no sense.
I really wanted to hurt the magic monkeys this week. I thought for sure one of mine would make it this week. Oh well. I am improving each week and that's what's important right? Right?? :)

I'm a simple thinker and believe it may have been just their Monkey Mystery Mood, but what you ought to remember is that you obviously have alot of fans who love your stuff so that's what counts! It's cool if the Monkeys pic a photo or two to feature, but it's what your followers/friends think that matters more! :)
Yeah the whole pp thing is quite random and confusing. I'm just enjoying the whole 365 project world with all its wonderful peeps and pics. Im learning, laughing and being inspired alot so that's all that matters to me for now :-)
Hi Aaron, you'll find that if you are consistently on the PP it actually becomes harder to get on there, its to make sure a few people don't permanently dominate the page, as that would be boring.
There's nothing "random" about the page, but that comment did remind me of Clarkes Third Law "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic".
the laws pertaining to PP are a law unto themselves and the monkeys. Not worth sweating over. Aaron, you got yourself a special photo there and the comments and faves are reflecting that. The monkeys come and the monkeys go.
yep, I worked out the algorithm uses things like number of followers, number of photos taken and number of shots n the PP to make it harder to get there
its not just the monkeys, I thought my photo from yesterday was pretty good and it only got 13 views and no comments, i might have been slightly biased on the subject but i generally get at least 1 comment, but the fact i think its my favourite photo for some time its not bothering me (too much), i have others which i thought, yeah this is the one! and got very little views and comments and it has tormented me for days!! this place just does your head in somedays i reckon :)
Not sure how it works either ...l have had a couple up on PP with less views and fav's than some others of mine that had more views and comments and fav's and they didn't get a look in...cant figure it out - also not sure when you stop being a new face, you said yours stopped after 200 uploads and perhaps more albums ... l have only one album and less than 100 uploads and haven't been up for quite a while - go figure ...l try not to worry about it as l like what l put up and the people who follow give me lovely feedback and l value their comments and get my buzz from them::)) - and l love this one you have here:)
@Scrivna So, what you're saying Ross is that I've overfed the monkeys so they are taking a break from my sweets for a while? I can live with that I suppose, as long as they don't start throwing poo :)
Aaron I go through this all the time. I have many pics that are so popular that they make the Top 20 for the week but never appear on the Pop Page. Its all because I get too many favs regularly so it makes my algrithym ratio too high to trigger PP. I've gotten used to it even though I think its BS!
@jsw0109 - very true happens to me all the time. I ahve pics with 45 favs not making PP. It all comes down to our own individual algorithm which needs a higher and higher ratio to trigger PP the more consistently you get favs where Top 20 is based purely on favs. Silly system if you ask me.
@michaelelliott It's all good in the end, as long as I am getting feedback I don't complain much. I did honestly think that somehow I had broken the system though because I went from having three on the PP one week to not being able to break in the following week. Makes sense to me now though... kind of... LOL
@grizzlysghost - Juilette @sparkle calls it the Pop Page Handcuffs - a very appropirate phrase. I guess this is what happens when you put mathematics in control of art :-) ps love your work!

so, I just saw I lady's photo that made it on the PP with just 3 fav's and around 20 comments. not that I get a ton of fav's but thurdays got 5 and of course it didn't make it to the PP.
ok, that's all. just had to tell everyone how unfair life is.....
@gracej Haha Grace, it sure seems that way sometimes doesn't it? I say just keep pumping out photos that make you happy, and if you're lucky, they will make other people happy too :) I am pretty accepting of how the PP works, now that I understand better how it works. :)
I've given up trying to figure out the PP page. I have seen some incredible photos taken by people I follow totally get ignored and I just scratch my head. Most shots on that page are truly inspiring, but occasionally I see a few and think "Huh? How the heck did that one get up there?" I saw one shot of the back of some T-Shirt with some stupid saying on it. Really? The other day I myself finally got one photo on the PP. I must admit, it was a nice feeling.
As for the new faces page -- I really don't get it. I've seen some people get 5 of their photos on there at once, when I really think one photo would surffice. That way it would leave more room to introduce more new faces to the rest of us. (which I presume is the original intention).
I also have given up on figuring out the PP. I enjoy browsing through them almost daily, but sometimes I scratch my head as to how some of them ended up there. Most are fab, however.

PP? I made it once, and it was a huge surprise, I wouldn't have known if someone hadn't sent me a comment. Pretty sure I'll never make Top 20, but it's not really a goal. I take photos for my enjoyment. If someone else likes them, that's cool. If not, I'll still take them. Some folks have stunning photos, and yet just a handful of followers, so they go unnoticed, too. Not sure how all this PP/NF works, but not sure it really matters.
You have beautiful photos. I love this one! Mine barely even get commented on, much less FAV or PP. Don't be discouraged, your photo's are inspiring to many :)
For anyone following this thread, I am once again on PP (currently have two there). I surmise the probation is about a week.
For those of you new to this thread and don't feel like reading the material above, it has been pretty much verified that if you are "Too Popular," you are put on "probation" for a short period. This is done so one person (or a few) don't totally dominate the popular page. While my photo above has FAR more faves and comments than the ones (two) I currently have on PP, it was posted within the probation period so missed the opportunity to be recognized.
@lauralatham Haha, I suppose it can be a curse :) But like I said in the title, it really isn't a big deal, I was just confused about how it "worked" :)
@michaelelliott@grizzlysghost - I don't think the Top 20 is based purely on faves. I had a shot last week with 52 faves and in last weeks Top 20 and this weeks, there were many shots with less than 50 faves in the list, yet mine was no where to be seen...
I am also not "too popular"... I have been doing this project for well over a year, and have some pics that have many many views and favs... not ONCE have I been on there. It used to bother me, but now I realize it's just like 7th grade..... I take pics because I like to. If they make ppl smile, great. as far as the PP... all I can say is "screw the magic monkeys" :-)
