Holga vs Diana vs La Sardina vs Other? :)

April 16th, 2012
I am thinking of getting a new lomography camera (I already have two Holgas, but another is not out of the question :) ) and wanted to see if anyone else out there has them, and what they think of the various kinds, etc. (If you have a picture to share, too, that would be great.)

Just to clarify, I mean lomography as in film, not lomo as in iPhone or digital in general, which is also nice, but still. :)

I don't know how popular these cameras are with 365ers, so we'll see if anyone weighs in! I know @pwallis has a La Sardina, and @lalola616 has a Diana, I believe, and past that, not sure.

Also - here is one of my more recent Holga shots - this was on a Holga 120CFN, with Kodak Tri-X b&w film.

IMO it's hard to beat a Holga LOL. I should have some Holgas to post this week; film was very old and had to be sent out, you never really know do you? :) I have really been liking the Sardinas though too! I also just borrowed my cousin's 1954 Kodak Brownie Bull's-Eye and will be running it through it's paces, so we'll see how that turns out together! :)

@grizzlysghost See?? Even though I have two Holgas, I really am leaning toward a more practical one! I have a 120 Holga, and a 35mm one, but the 35mm is a TLR, and it's a little bit of a pain. I'm really sort of wanting just a plain-jane 35mm to carry around on a daily basis. I signed up at lomography.com recently, thanks to @chewyteeth and his encouragement, and I'm on a bender to do more lomo on a more regular basis. :)

From what I can tell, the Dianas have a higher incidence of mechanical issues (film advancing, etc.) then the Holgas, but I could be totally wrong.

Sardine Can! But I've yet to try the others, so I'm biased. Still, look at the yummy blur and oversaturation:)
April 16th, 2012
@pwallis Oooh see. And with the day of my birf coming up - I'll get an Amazon g.c. from work, and this will outweigh the costs of the new camera and forthwith and what-not. And then we'd be camera twins!!
April 16th, 2012
@beautifulthing camera twin buddy!
April 16th, 2012
If you want a cool, easy to carry 35mm, I would totally go with the Sardina! My Holga is 120 as well, with a 35mm adaptor; it's fussy but in a good way :)

Personally I love shooting on my Diana, but the thing is, that you never know what you gonna get. You can get an awesome feeling when opening your enveloppe with pictures, but you can also find out that there are for example just two good ones. But dont let it desapoint you and try again and again! If you buy one, I can give you some tips if wanted :) just let me know... (And if you are really thinking about getting a diana, consider also the diana mini, it can be much cheaper as you could use a normal film).

I know it's not in your list, but personally i would also consider the fish-eye or the action sampler!

April 16th, 2012
@lalola616 I am definitely leaning toward a Diana - I have wanted one for awhile now. :) I want the pink one! I'm not a big fan of fisheye in general, but I've seen the action sampler shots and they are awesome. Do you have one?
April 16th, 2012
I will be posting from my Cunon (made in Taiwan in the 70's) later this week. I do love the simplicity and the fact that it has for f stops included in its awesomeness.
April 16th, 2012
@beautifulthing wooooo. you get an amazon gift card just for being born and working there. That is one nice perk. I am going to take the holga class this summer and am leaning towards the camo model for all my sneaky street shots.
April 16th, 2012
How about one of those put it together yourself thingies, that was prob no help at all. I think @chewyteeth has one though, which may help a little bit more
April 16th, 2012
@beautifulthing no, i dont have an action sampler, but it's on my wishlist since like two years...I just love the pictures from it.
And diana is really great, at least I enjoy shooting with it :) and so do my friends that have it.
April 16th, 2012
@brumbe I still think I might take the Holga class at my local photography center. I think it'd be fun! We also get cards for our anniversaries of working here - that $25 burns a hole in my pocket.

@lalola616 I just saw my first action sampler shots the other day - it looks like a lot of fun!

@38mm This one? http://photojojo.com/store/awesomeness/diy-tlr-camera-kit/ Those are cool, but I definitely want a non-TLR 35mm, as I already have the TLR version.
April 16th, 2012
@brumbe That one would be cool to have - but I don't know that I trust my lab to get the developing right on that. :) I'd have to wait until I could develop myself. They can barely get my Internet uploads right on a consistent basis, the poor little dears - I think having to take something to the sprockets would blow their minds!
April 16th, 2012
@beautifulthing well, I guess our goal this summer should be least to be experts at developing our film.
April 16th, 2012
hey
have you browsed cameras on lomo to see examples of the photos?
I'd personally get the LCA
not on your list but, still.
I have the holga and I think its pap. My friend has the Diana and its okay, but Paula's pics on the Sardina are super nice and I prefer 35mm, and its cheaper.

So I say the Sardina or the LCA. Have you looked at the LCA?
Just don't buy it on Lomo, but I think you guys have got the message by now! ;)
April 16th, 2012
@chewyteeth I would love the LCA - but they are EXPENSIVE! I can get a niccccce Nikon SLR for what they go for.
April 16th, 2012
@beautifulthing @brumbe Just use B&W film for the Lomo spinner.... Shawn Hoke has that tute on how to develop film at home, sounds like it would cost around (get it....around?) $100 to start and then you could get the print shop to print it after you cut the negatives to size at home.......
April 16th, 2012
@beautifulthing sure they're £300 on the lomo website, but I've seen them for £70 on eBay, that's like $110 I think. That's not too bad is it? The effects are pretty good.
What about the Lomo Smena 8?
Thats a lovely little camera (I have one) and they go for about £25 - $40
I just think the diana and holga a just plastic boxes with 120 film inside. The smena has f stop settings based on the weather and ISO data.
April 16th, 2012
@shadesofgrey I just bought chalkboard paint and shelves so I can have a living room like Shawn Hoke. Except for I hate the shelves and have to rethink something cooler than Ikea.
April 16th, 2012
@brumbe Find some reclaimed barnwood........or check instructables.com for some off the wall DIY shelf ideas!
April 16th, 2012
@chewyteeth Dude. I just found a Smena on eBay for $6. It's on.
April 16th, 2012
@shadesofgrey I am going with reclaimed brackets, but glass so it makes everything uncluttered. I did think of just beating the living shit out of wood with a chain and dropping it several floors and then staining, but I like the concept of the old rusty metal and floating glass. But off to check instructables.
April 16th, 2012
@brumbe @shadesofgrey When I grow up, I want to be Shawn Hoke.
April 17th, 2012
@beautifulthing @shadesofgrey @chewyteeth @38mm @lalola616 @grizzlysghost @pwallis
Have dropped off two rolls of Ilford 100ASA at lab this morning for pickup on Friday: one shot with Holga 120N and other Yashica A. Will post over weekend mebbe. Also dropped of some Velvia to pickup today. Hoping got some star trails @brumbe in 35mm. Had one good night without cloud or moon and I took it. Would love a Sardina, but agree with @chewyteeth an LCA, Lubitel or other groovy Russia cam would be the go. My view is to get an authentic one through eBay from old eastern block countries rather than loom site which looks super pricey.

When's your birthday Shelly?
April 17th, 2012
I'm really feeling all of the film love in here; makes me all nice and cozy :)
April 17th, 2012
Shell
my wish list is Fed 2, Kiev 5, Zorki 4k, Zenit 1, Smena Symbol, Lubitel 166 universal

SO I kinda agree with @peterdegraaff, buy Russian. ;)
