Waterproof Camera for Holiday?

May 20th, 2012
We are going on holiday in a few weeks time and I am thinking of buying a waterproof digital compact. I will have my usual Canon 500D with me but I obviously can't take it in the water with me, and I'm never keen to take it on the beach with me unless there's something specific I'm planning to shoot.

I'm a bit put off by the prices however.. may of the ones I've seen with good reviews cost £200+. This is a camera that I'm likely to use 2-3 weeks per year, max. Worried that after a couple of years, it will become outdated and I'll want to replace it with the latest thing.

Does anyone else own one of these in addition to their DSLR? Can anyone recommend a particular one?

Thx in advance!

Panasonic FT1 (TS1). You can probably get it for a good price second hand:

Theres some cheap disposable underwater film cameras that sort of do the equivalent job of a cheap digital waterproof camera if you dont want to do it often (gotta pay processing costs though)
Photos are not amazing but the day I went snorkelling with mine the water was murky anyway so even a great camera would have struggled to get good photos

You could always consider a waterproof housing for your camera. They make them for most popular makes and models.

I have a Nikon AW 100 and I have a Pentax W90. I purchased the Nikon because the W90 was not that great. I have not done underwater stuff with the Nikon yet but the macro and regular images are fantastic. I have images posted using it in my project and other albums. I must try it out in water sometime very soon. I would recommend the Nikon as a top pick. You can also check out dpreview.com and read reviews and do a side by side comparison.
Good luck with your purchase and have a great holiday :)

The Canon G12 (or whatever the series is up to - I have a G10) is an awesome compact camera you can get with an underwater housing. The on-camera flash is pretty ordinary, but in shallow water you can achieve quite good results shooting RAW (without flash). I use mine with two old Nikonos strobes, which I set to slave mode and fire using the on-camera flash.

The two pics above were taken with flash. This one without:

The fujifilm XP range, the 10 should set you back about $100 and the 50 about $180. They're sand proof, temperature proof, you can drop them and just about anything, perfect for holidays.
I don't own one but I'm going away too and I did a lot of research and these seem to do it. I saw one in the UK posted from hong kong on eBay and it was going as low as £35.
