Off Camera Flash for Canon EOS DIGITAL REBEL XTi

June 3rd, 2012
My flash shoe on top of my camera is broken. The camera is old, and I dont think it is worth putting alot of $$ into fixing this. Does anyone have any idea if this is something that I could perhaps fix myself and if so, any sites that might have some instruction for me to do it?

How is it broken? It's unusual to break the camera side, usually it's the flash side of the shoe that gets damaged.

@abirkill Iam not sure what happened to it. The flash works on a friends camera! I think maybe somethings bent or something like that. The built in flash works so I am really at a loss.

@sharritta OK, so there's no apparent physical damage to the camera shoe, it's just that when you fit a flash to the camera, it doesn't work?

In that case, the most likely cause is the camera's flash detection switch is broken or missing. You can test this by putting the external flash onto the camera, and pushing the camera's flash release button (the one used to pop the internal flash up).

If you hear the internal flash trying to pop up (it'll make a clicking noise two or three times) then the camera isn't detecting the external flash, and that's the problem. (Note that in this case, you'll get an error on the camera's display, because it can't pop the internal flash up as the external flash is in the way. You can clear this by switching the camera off and on again).

If that's the case, it's often possible to replace the flash detection switch -- some example instructions here: http://www.conraderb.com/flashrepair/#replace

@abirkill I tried it and sure enough it is trying to pop the the external flash! Thanks for sending the instructions. It looks like something I can do. I will let you know how it works out! :-)
