As it's a leap year some places say it's today but others say tomorrow, does anyone know? I was planning to get up early and get photos but think I may be too late now!
The solstice is 20 June 2012 at 23:09 GMT. There are some sites saying the first sunrise on the Solstice is the 21st, but technically that's the first sunrise after the solstice. Most people are considering the 21st to be the first official day of summer, although it technically (astronomically) occurs tonight.
@kannafoot How could it be the first day of summer when May Day is the start of Summer? I will be hoping to get the sunset tonight as today it is more like summer than tomorrow.
Thank goodness we have finally gotten to the Winter solstice here down under. I hate, hate, hate short days so I always breathe a sigh of relief when we finally get here and then the days start to get longer again- even if the cold weather is still just getting started!
I got up to get the dawn, but the pictures are rather uninspiring as the sky in Dayton, Ohio is practically clear of clouds, so there's no much for the light to reflect upon. The horizon about an hour before official dawn was a bit more appealing with some progression of color, but nothing spectacular.
Today, June 20th, actually is the longest day of this year. Depending on where you are in the world, the actual moment of the solstice will take place either very late tonight (but before midnight) in locations west of the prime meridian, or shortly after midnight for places east of 0 degrees longitude.
