Nikon makro lens

I had a play with this in a camera shop today, and I think I like it, a lot, does anyone out there have the same? I'd love a recommendation before parting with my cash.
Thanks in advance : )

Usually I find Ken Rockwell's no-nonsense reviews very useful. Please see the link below:

@viranod Copied and pasted the new link, thanks, I'll read up with a fresh mind in the morning. Thank you : ))

Have you tried the 60mm macro or 105mm macro that Nikon makes? Our DS has the 60mm and he has to get really close to the subject. I have the 105mm and I don't have to get as close to the subject. I'd think the 40mm would require you to get really close to the subject.

@mikehamm I was also going to note that. I have the 60mm and love it, but wouldn't want to go any shorter. I would love the 105mm, but wasn't willing to pay for it. And that's what it often comes down to. I think the 40mm is about $250, the 60mm is about $600, and the 105mm is around $1000 as I remember.

I have one and love it, its a very nice lens for the price. The only negative thing i have to say about it is that you have to get very close to the subject. I use this lens for just about anything and it rarely leaves my camera.

I have the 40mm af-s, 85mm af-s, and 105mm af-d macro lenses from Nikon. By far my favorite is the 105mm one. I do enjoy using the other two and the 40mm is a great price for what you get.

Here are some shots with the 40mm lens....

All. Thank you for posting your comments and remarks. I was happy to see this discussion, as I have been 'borrowing' my brothers Macro and am going to be purchasing one... possibly this week. I'm excited and freaked out because it's a HUGE chunk-o-change. All this info has been golden. Thanks!

@viranod
Your link was great, I followed one of Kens links to this one. It looks like a great choice for macro
This one looks like the go. @lorraineb

@lorraineb The shorter the focal length of the macro lens, the closer you have to get to the subject. If you plan on shooting subjects like jewelry, a 30mm or 50mm lens will work well. But bugs and other insects may spook easily (or some bugs you just don't want to get so close to because they're venomous), then a macro lens with a longer focal length (say, 100mm) will be much more helpful. 8)

This thread is perfect timing for me too. I went today in search of a macro lens. Since joining the project and seeing so many amazing macro shots, I think it's time I invested. I know next to nothing so I appreciate the info and advice. I live in a small town with few photo store options so I came home empty handed. I'm thinking the 60mm or 105mm might be best. I'm hoping to upgrade to a full frame body soon. Would either of these work on a full frame?

Thanks for everyones input on this, I've decided to go with this one, I already have a Sigma 70 300, with makro which I can use from a distance, so this will be great for getting up close and personal ; ) The price is also a factor in my decision, £200 is ok for me right now and I'll dream of the others for a while yet! : ))
Special thanks to Nod for the link : )

@kwind I believe both the 60mm and 105mm work on full frame cameras.

@lorraineb I have the 85mm micro lens Nikon. I also toyed with the idea of the 40mm but you have to get too close to the subject which means you block out some of the available light .. I think there are good reviews on the net about these lens. I wanted to get the 105mm either it or Sigma which was similarly priced to the 85mm Nikkor ... but as luck would have it .. Sigma upgraded to one with Image Stab.. and the price went up with the upgrade so settled for middle ground with the 85mm. Its a good length in that you don't have to get so close ..but it is DX only .. oh sorry rambling on .... the 60mm is an old lens ... if you can afford it go for the 105mm

I was thinking more about this thread. If you ever want to upgrade to FX, you'll want to look at the 60mm or 105mm macro. You can buy used af-d versions for less $ or the newer af-s versions. The used 60mm is around $300 and the used 105mm around $400 for the af-d versions (but you will need a camera body with a focus motor in the body unless you will be focusing manually). The 60mm is around $560 and the 105mm is around $975 for the af-s versions. I've had good luck buying used lenses on adorama and keh.

Two of the macro lenses I have right now (the 40mm and the 85mm) are both DX lenses. When I bought them I didn't think I would ever upgrade to FX, but now it has been in the back of my mind.
