Printing Advice - When to use Matte Or Gloss?

June 27th, 2012
Hi all,

I'm going to enter 3 photos into a local photo comp. I was after a little guidance as to how to have them printed. Is there some basic guidelines as to what sort of finish is best suited to certain styles of photos ie landscapes, sunrises, portraits etc.

Thanks in advance...Dean.

I always use matte....it just looks better and you get less shine

If pure black is important in your photos, I suggest gloss or semi-gloss. Velvet fine art paper is amazing, but not if people will be able to touch it (doesn't do well with fingerprints

I tend to use glossy because that is just what I happen to have in my house...I like it just fine for everything I have printed :)

I use Epson Ultra Premium Luster. It is a beautiful semi-gloss or soft gloss surface. I would highly recommend it. It works well for everything. I would also recommend using a glossy paper for hot colors that you want to pop.

Glossy for landscape and matt for portraits. :)

I use a pearl or satin
finish. But paper made from fiber has such a nicer quality about it and if people are buying afterwards makes a good quality print.
