So I have been challenged by my partner to create some pics that contain emotion with out people in them. WTF? I don't consider myself to be an emotional cripple, but I have no idea what he means. Can anyone shed some light or give me some ideas please??
:)
I know I can trust my fellow 365ers to help me out :)
@calx Interesting one!
I just had a quick look at photos with 'emotion' tags, e.g. http://365project.org/tags/fear etc and it's surprising how many have people in (or maybe not...).
An interesting challenge! I disagree with HH ( @humphreyhippo ) tho. There's too much sadness and fear in our lives as it is. Rather look for something upbeat, something happy, something to bring a smile rather than a frown. Having said that, I can't begin to think where I'd start.
But for pure grief, there's nothing to beat HH's pic (which I've only now realised I didn't Fav at the time!)
@kwiksilver xxx
I think fear and sadness are easier to evoke in an image. Maybe because there is so much of it around.
The empty shoes idea is interesting me know - I had a friend who served in the Met Police many years ago, and she said of all the things around dealing with death, it was the empty shoes that freaked people out.
I'm depressing myself now. I'll go away. ;)
@kwiksilver - But, Gillian, the challenge is to create emotion in a picture without a person in it.
I agree that HH's picture is quite powerful, but doesn't help OP.
Quite a challenge, and a good one! You've got great suggestions already ... to get a bit more prescriptive, rainy days often evoke a sense of moodiness; bright images can evoke cheeriness, and blurred flower images often have a sense of romance and magic.
@primitiveprobe showed you a good rainy day shot, and HH's ribbon shot is a fantastic bright image.
Here is one from @sabaa that conveys a sense of magic:
And another that from @carrapeta00 that may evoke a sense of anticipation:
@mikehamm True, Mike. Didn't think of that - that the person shouldn't be in the pic But I still stand by my feeling that there's too much sadness in our lives and we should rather be looking "on the bright side". Oh dear, now I'm going to have to practice what I preach ....
IRIS THE CIRCUS ELEPHANT: Stirs emotions of sadness, dispair, heartbreak.
HOMELESS: Some found this disturbing, creepy, eerie, sad, unsettling. I found this baby doll aboandoned on a park bench in the dark all covered with frost.
LAZY PALOUSE RIVER
One like this can bring the emotions of peace, joy, calm to one.
I think I might argue that if our pictures don't have emotion in them, they probably are not our best pictures. To me, I don't care how technically correct it is if there is not a connection and feeling evoked.
Certainly as a photographer I can connect with how difficult some shots are to take, but I don't expect others to be wowed by technique if it doesn't move them as a picture.
i suck when it comes to emotions... my other get pushed challenge this week was to photograph something i love in a way that portrays that love... STRUGGLING with this bigtime!
@tigerdreamer Totally agree Karen. Some of my favourite photos convey what can be considered negative emotions but sometimes these are the strongest and they still resonate with me:

If I had to reference emotions from my own recent pix, I'd go with:
Sad: http://365project.org/humphreyhippo/365/2012-08-06
Happy: http://365project.org/humphreyhippo/365/2012-08-10
Not sure that helps. I think fear or sadness would be the one I'd try. Spooky pics or empty shoes.

Sorrow
Panic
comfort
Happiness
romance
Love
yellow - happiness, sunshine
blue - can be serenity or depression
green - jealousy, peace
red - anger
My Get Pushed challenge was to use light to show emotions, but I used a person in one of the two I put together.
