Camera Recomendations Please!

I am getting ready to upgrade my camera. I do portrait photography and would like to start my own business doing natural light photography at some point. Right now my budget is in the $700 range. Thanks for the help! :)

I have a Canon EOS 1100D (Rebel T3) which I purchased with a twin lens kit for $799 AUD. It is a entry level DSLR.
I found quite quickly I updated my lens for a 50mm 1.8 (around $100) which is a much nicer lens for portraiture.

I'm in the same boat as you and am considering getting canon 60d. Almost got one today.

$700 for the camera body, or TOTAL for body and a lens?

nah the 1100 is no good.
The 550D is good. I just got one for £360 off ebay, it was from Canon USA but selling refurbished in the UK. In reality its worth about £550. You'll get one for less than $700 for sure, and if you can stomach refurbished (which means it had a fault when it was bought new, so it was fixed and cannot now be sold new even though it hasn't been used) and if you can stomach ebay, which I have bought some 50 cameras off, you'll easy get a 550 (AKA T2i) for less than that, and probably get the f1.8 50mm too which you defo need for portraits. Let me know if you want any info, but line it up next to the 1100 and you'll see how much better it is.
Don't let anyone tell you the budget isn't big enough, these micky mouse shoppers who throw their money away havn't a clue the good deals that are out there.
However, the Fuji x100 is supposed to be the best portrait camera by all accounts, but you'd have to save up for a while longer.

this is a portrait I took with the 550 (T2i) which is taken with the 50mm lens, all together it cost me £440, which I reckon is just shy of $700.

@mariboo for $700 the new Nikon d3200 is alot better camera then the T2i/550d beats it in all areas, even the cost of the Nikon D5100 has dropped so well worth a look.
If you can stretch your buget just a little :) the D7000 body only and a nifty 50 f1.8 would be the best option for you in the DX market.

Is it the camera or the eye behind the camera makes the difference ??
