How do you get the f number down as low as it can go?

You will need to turn your camera on aperture priority mode, from there you should have a dial that you can use to change the aperture. Turn it so the number is lower.

OK, digging - you can download the manual for that camera from here http://www.fotoez.net/fujifilm-finepix-s2950-s2990-digital-compact-camera-users-manual-owners-instruction-6214 - there's a link there to the 144 page pdf booklet.
On your camera, you turn the dial on top to A to get aperture control - the instructions are on page 44 (28 of the pdf booklet) for shooting in Aperture Priority. And you really do need to read the manual yourself.

As well as the above I recommend a good straight forward book like this one, http://www.amazon.co.uk/Collins-Complete-Photography-Course-Garrett/dp/0007279922/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1345719096&sr=8-5
That will really help you to learn the basics. : )

Shannon, try google for easily found information like what an SLR is, then you can keep discussions for things which interest people or can start of a discussion or debate.

@lorraineb @chewyteeth Dave.. this is a discussion I am interested in.. being new to the photography art.. with as much knowledge running around here I feel like I am in hog heaven!!!! And everyone has been extremely helpful.
Lorraine. I did just order that book :-) Thank you!

@cheribug Its a really good starting point Cheryl, discussions are good but its so much better to sit down with a book or even a youtube clip to learn something new. My new students in September will get to know that book very well! : )

Really cheryl, were you wondering too how to change the aperture on your Fuji finepix S2950 for which you don't have the manual too?

General advice to make us all better photographers is always a pleasure but for the most simple questions, like how do I change the lens on my camera, what is IOS, how do I get blur, I think google might be more appropriate.

@chewyteeth NO... I do have my manual for my D5100 and my L810, and sometimes I get confrused about what button or wheel or what.. is what....and this thread did help.. I bought a book :-) to read.. and have followed lorraine so if I have any questions on it I will be hitting her up.. and Dave.. you really have helped too. I read a lot of these threads.. :-)
And honestly.. a private message thingy on here would be good for the not so general questions.. don't you think??

@cheribug
yes good idea, private messages to someone you know who is up to date with their camera is defo a better option.
