Another question: Macro filter with a 35mm lens?

September 13th, 2012
I know I ask a lot of questions, and I'm sorry, but you guys are a wealth of information for a new to DSLR user like myself. I come to you again with another question, until I get my 50mm lens, would a 35mm be at the very least -decent- with a macro filter?

35s are pretty cool, but to be honest I never use them. They are more a wide-angle type lens so I wouldn't bother with a macro for one; better you macro your 50mm through tubes and/or filters.

Yeah the 35 is my kit lens, I'm just trying to figure out things to do with my 35 so I don't get bored too fast. When I get my 50 I'll probably neglect this lens. But until then all the experiments!

You do have a point though. Wide-Angle=/=Macro compatible. :'C

you can get passable shots with macro filters on 35mm lenses

but the only way you will know for sure if its right for you is to suck it and see, at the very least you will have a set of macro filters for when you do get your nifty 50

@asrai: You have a very good point. :'3

macro filters? oh why? ... heehee... just kinding, macro filters could be fun... extension tubes are funner...

I don't see how you can get bored with a 35mm on a dslr... that is a 'normal' lense today on these 'cropped' sensors... all my family shoot with in 70s-90s in 35mm was with a K1000 and a 50mm lens. My father never needed anything else... 50mm on your 5100 will be a short tele or portrait lens... to tight for most living rooms, kitchens and other family gatherings... but nice for taking portraits or some near to sports action shots... if I am running out the door and only get one lens... lets say a kids birthday or friends wedding... 31mm it is... group shots with a step back... first dance... kids playing... vows... silly faces... it all works... day time, night time... all great... but maybe that is just me... I enough the normalness or normal lenses... just look with your eyes and lift your camera... nothing seems closer nor further... just normal...

@grizzlysghost @paign FYI Aaron's point of calling it wide angle is not wrong.. he just shots with a bigger sensor...

@Icywarm; I'm considering my 50mm [which I'm ordering in the next week and a half] being my last lens purchase for a while. It seems like a very versatile lens. Decent macro capabilities, even moreso with tubes [also ordering] and a filter. Seems like it has a decent DOF and, it's a little aesthetic, but I've seen nice samples of light stars with it, and that interests me.

Your saying a 50mm would be a short tele gives me hope that I won't have to dole out ungodly amounts of money for 50 different lenses, I don't use my cameras for too many super-distanced shots. :D

@paign Your fifty will work at 75mm on a cropped sensor and 50mm is good for everything at that rate, the nearest you can actually get to 35/50 without forking loads out is a 28mm lens which would give you 42mm.

What ever lens you are looking at multiply it by 1.6 and thats what it will work at, I think it may be 1.5 for some cameras, not certain about that though.

My 28mm lens is my favourite lens right now, a 35mm would be great. I also love using a close-up filter, but I use it with (old manual focus) 50mm and 70mm lenses. I think you'll find the 35mm really useful for lots of stuff where the 50mm will be a bit long.

I personally like the crop factor but would like to have a truly wide lens one day, I just look at my fifty as an 80mm portrait lens, likewise with the 28mm I view that as near to 50 as I'm going to get without splashing the cash so I can live with that. My feet can adjust the for other few mm.
