Camera or lens problem

October 13th, 2012
My Sony a380 started jamming mid shutter release and displaying a Camera Error message. I had to shut off and start over. When sent for repairs they "repaired aperture control unit". When I got it back it continued to do the same and in addition at times the F display shows F---- instead of F5.6. I have to jiggle the lens or shut off to get it to work. Sony said it sounds like the camera is not recognizing the lens. The repair under my extended service plan went out of business so I am thinking of buying new vs repairing 3 yr old camera. It happens with both of my lens' so am wondering if it could be the lens or most likely the body. Any thoughts?

Only going off the info you provided, I think that's a body issue. You might have a lose contact on the lens mount or something is happening with the circuit board. Which model?

Oh, never mind I see the model number - duh! A quick look on the web didn't show anything. You might want to research it a little more.

@emsabh Thank you much! Loose contact sounds much nicer that circuit board. Will check into it further.

It sounds almost like a connection problem or something with the digital components.

You might want to post this question on the Sony Alpha forum on dpreview.com. There are a lot of people there with the same or similar cameras and they may be able to answer better.

I have an a55 and when I use my lensbaby you have to enable shutter release w/o lens in the menu items. When I do that, the aperture displays like you said, F--. However, it looks normal when I switch back to a regular lens, even if I don't change the menu item.

Have you tried cleaning the contacts on both the camera and lenses?

@pengu1n Thank you Karen. I will check out dpreview.com.

@jannkc Want to hear something bizarre? About a week after I posted the comment above, I went on a weekend trip and my Sony a55 developed the same problem that yours is having. Fortunately mine is still under warranty, so it's off to the repair shop. I'll let you know what they say and if they find anything specific wrong. I'm worried they won't find anything and I'll be stuck with a weird intermittent problem.

Also make sure your camera has the latest firmware update. If you google your camera model (e.g. A55) and firmware you should find something at a sony site. Also you may want to consider resetting the camera back to software defaults in the menu. I have the a65 and can do this so I'm assuming both the a55 and a380 have something similar. On one occasion I had to do this. Clean lens contacts and also ( really important) try to replicate with another lens.

Btw, In the past I had a a55 and experienced weird problems such as yours which were corrected with a firmware update. On a funny note, Most recently I thought my camera was foobar but it turned out I had the HDR feature turned on in Jpg mode (which I rarely shoot in) and it was defaulting to three shots at different exposures-as programmed.. I was shooting in real low light and didn't realize this setting was on so the camera acted odd (long multiple shutters...what appeared to me ask lock ups) but really was trying to take three shots like it was programmed to. Lesson learned...stupid settings. . Hope you get answers. I would sure like to know how (and if) you got it fixed... All the best, Brian

@pengu1n Did you ever find out the problem? I did buy a new camera but would like to be able to use the old one if it is fixable.

I haven't heard anything yet. They said it would take 6-8 weeks, and it's only been about 4 so far. Started to miss it though! @jannkc
