A cheap, decent camera for a beginner?

December 1st, 2012
I will be starting my Project 365 January 1, and I'm thinking about getting a decent camera for it; the one I have is fine, but nothing special. Any tips for cameras that take good shots but are cheap (I'm thinking under $150, but I don't know if that's even reasonable)? Thanks so much!

Here's a really good guide for you - can't go wrong with any one of the top 5 :) Good luck! http://www.reviewgist.com/best-digital-camera-price-under-150

The Panasonic Lumix is amazing... I wouldn't mind one as a walkaround camera.

My advice would be start with whatever you have. As you take pictures every day you will get a better feel for what kinds of things you want to do and you will make better choices when you buy your camera.

@rishi Thanks for starting this thread. I'm going to be looking for a replacement p&s soon.
@sarajeal Thanks for the link. Good article to start hunting with!

I agree with Karen. I am about five months into my project. I have already learned so much here that I would have different requirements now for a camera than I would have when I started.

I agree with Karen and Nada but it depends a little on how you think your skills are at present. I started my project this year knowing nothing and with a very simple and old point & shoot. I learnt as much as I could about settings, composition, lighting and taking as good shots as the camera would allow and I learnt about processing. I did that for 2 months then bought my dSLR. So maybe the question you need to ask is, will I be wanting a dSLR in a few months and wish I'd waited and bought that instead, that's assuming your finances allow it?

Think of what you will be shooting before rushing to an SLR a compact is much easier to always have with you. Sony Cybershot / Nikon Coolpix / Canon Ixus.

I love my Canon PowerShot ELPH. You can get great day and nighttime shots. Here are three examples of photos I have taken with it for my 365 project

I've been using a Panasonic Lumix ZS8 exclusively for my project so far. It has a good zoom and a very nice macro feature. I'll be happy to keep it even when I upgrade, because it's so small and easy to stick in a bag or coat pocket.

I agree with @godders. I've used a Sony CyberShot P&S for my entire project and I love it. It's super easy to carry around everywhere, and while it does have its limitations, I've found it awesome for what I like to do.

Like many others, I think wait until you know what direction you want to head then buy something to do that. In the mean time have a look on this site under BROWSE & CAMERAS at the amazing things some people are doing with their iPhones & other phone cameras. Its inspiring. Maybe you can start with that.

@rishi Hardly any compact digital cameras now have an optical viewer, which for me is a must. I just got a Canon Powershot A1300 which DOES have an optical viewfinder as well as a good size LCD screen. I find it's brilliant and it cost me £80.

Sorry for not answering on this thread for so long! I did end up asking for a new p&s for Christmas and got the Canon PowerShot ELPH 110 HS (ixus) (Thanks for the suggestion @godders and @nancyperry) and absolutely LOVE it. I've decided a dSLR is in my future sometime, but not sure when. Until then, this camera is brilliant, and I'm thinking that when I've got a dSLR, I'll still really appreciate having a nice, compact camera. So, thank you all for your suggestions!
