public shooting

Those that take public snaps.

Does the person know you are pointing the camera at them?

How do you do it without someone thinking your a werido?

Any tips on taking good public ones?

Thanks

the best ones are taken without the person knowing usually. Easiest way to ease into it is to go to festivals and fairs and any public gathering that draws crowds - you blend in more that way. As you get more comfortable shooting strangers try picking a backdrop that you find would make an interesting shot even with no one in it. Then wait for someone to walk by and snap away

@jsw0109 that sounds easy enough and awesome...

I agree with Jeff's suggestions. The first places I went were ones where you would expect to see tourists with cameras. It gets you feeling like you're not sticking out. Then you just get braver over time (says me who's still getting used to it)

@tulipgirl thanks :) might get brave

Looking at the last couple of months about half of the people in my pictures knew they were being photographed, about half didn't. Some knew they were being photographed by others. Some were delighted, some didn't care.

Ive had a couple of goes with varying results what I do know its not as easy as it looks I now go the sneaky rout ....

Mostly I agree with what the others said... Most people don't notice or don't care... I rarely go for sneaky.. Mostly try to blend into the background... I often pretend to be innocently shooting architecture and "oops - seems you walked thru my scene" ;).

Last night I placed my tripod right on the sidewalk and then would snap away. most times people were so self absorbed that they walked into my photo without any notice what so ever. I could also move around and get most people because I had become a fixture instead of a camera

@phillyphotos exactly!

You will occasionally get caught. Don't let it stop you.

These guys were too busy concentrating to notice me!

There is no easy way in my opinion. I have tried taking a long lens and sitting at an outdoor cafe, photographing people on the street - a good method. Sitting on the ground against a building with camera to my chest has worked but is harder. Shooting from the hip with a pocket camera is very hard. Shooting with a cell phone while pretending to text is a pretty good method. Nothing more difficult for me than good street photography!

I took this on a phone whilst pretending I was reading a text:

thanks i'm going to give street shots a go next year - it frightens me to do it lol, and i'm very self conscious

A good zoom lens is always a help ;)

Thus far I've confined my attentions to taking photos of photographers for the most part. They're easy. :-)

Does everyone else here feel comfortable publishing photos of strangers? I don't...and have gone out of my way not to photograph people who do not know that I'm photographing them....but maybe it's OK?
