Negative scanners

December 11th, 2012
Hi folks! I saw that there were 2 discussions started about negative scanners but not really sure there were any real answers.
I am looking for a negative scanner. I want to scan 35mm and 2 1/4. I have a flat bed scanner already. That does a decent job on prints, but I really want to start getting my negs digitized. Sending them out is costly unless you can send them in bulk. I am interested in doing them at my leisure lol cause I have so much of that!

Anybody have any recent experience with negative scanners? Would love any and all advice. Was hoping to point Santa in the right direction lol!
Thanks.

I have the Epson V330, which I see is selling on amazon for $80 US. I was after the CanoScan9000, but couldn't find one in stock at my local shops. I've been very happy with it. And you can't beat the price!

Oh, and some info that might be useful: you can scan four or five negatives at a time with the V330. I scan in "pro" mode with a higher dpi, but it takes less than five minutes per scan set. I just sit and do it while I'm organizing my photo files.

I use a Canoscan 8800f and it's excellent! Search for the tag "film-lives" and check exif on some of the prints you like; some of them will show the scanner used. For example, check out this shot of mine; click on the camera used "Canoscan 8800F" and it will take you to a link with the same kind of scanners.

Santa is bringing me a CanoScan9000F. Let's just say he sent it via a commercial carrier and not only does he not wrap my presents, his elfer help Paul was so excited, it is sitting box unopened on my office floor!

You rock Santa!!

@grizzlysghost - Bought on the advice of Aaron who's great CanoScan photos were just what we are hoping for to digitize the family slides and old photos!!

@swguevin Congratulations, you'll love that scanner!

@cmc1200 Caryn those seem to be very clean images with sharp details. @grizzlysghost Aaron that is a beautiful image, love how the light falls off the bottom, so that is film you shot this summer?
@swguevin LOL LOL Sheila you are a lucky girl!

Aaron I guess you would say flat bed is the way to go, so it is capable of scanning medium format negs? do they have to be scanned using the holders? I have a few 4x5 negs I would love to get scanned.

I did take that shot this summer Dawn, and it was a bit of a mistake but I liked it! The scanner comes with holders for 35mm film, mounted 35mm slides, and medium format. You don't have to use the holders if you don't wish (I've scanned 16mm and other odd-sized negatives with no problems). @peterdegraaff uses this scanner extensively (the 9000), he would be able to tell you a lot more.

@sunshinephoto5 @swguevin @grizzlysghost @cmc1200 I use a Canoscan 9000F. It allows various compression options for saving and I like advanced controls. I scan mostly at 1200dpi but sometimes at 1600dpi. Plenty of film scans in my album to look at. It is readily bought online.

@peterdegraaff thanks Peter, Think my list for Santa is ready. Both you and Aaron @grizzlysghost have given me the itch to get my Nikon FM dusted off...there is just something about film isn't there? I am sad to say I did just throw out a bunch of kodak portra 120 film, was over 8 years old...

Ohhh..... I wish I had stopped reading before I got to "portra"... :) Expired film is the best film!

@peterdegraaff @grizzlysghost So I have the scanner up & running and i am having a lot of fun. I came across some 4x5 negs I took using my uncle's 4x5 camera when i was a kid. It would not let me scan. How do you scan your 4x5's?
