I am thinking of buying a new camera. After lots of searching, I have found a Nikon D5100 for £400 and a Canon EOS 600D for £425. Seeing as the price difference is minimal the cost isn't swaying me much, but I really can't decide.
Both cameras seem popular on here, so I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice.
I have picked up both cameras in the shop... I thinkkkk I might like the feel of the Nikon more, but I sort of prefer the look of the Canon and I've used Canon before, whereas I would be new to Nikon.
The specs seem to be pretty simillar but I just don't know. For example, the Nikon has a 16.2MP sensor whereas the Canon has an 18MP sensor...
Can anyone give me some advice?! I don't like to just trust reviews on amazon, you guys are going to have a much better idea on the pro's and con's of each!
If anyone has used one or both of them I would be so greatfull.
My current dslr is heavy and out of date and I reeeally want to upgrade it but I'm lost haha!
I got myself the Canon 600D earlier this year but I also had a serious look at the Nikon 5100 too, both are fantastic cameras and there is not much to choose between the two to be honest, i made my choice on the Canon as it felt better in the hand and i haven't been disappointed one bit on my choice .
One thing to bare in mind if you are planning on building your lens collection up is that i think Canon lenses and cheaper than Nikon.
This will open up the great debate!!! Nikon people will say get the Nikon, and the Canon people will say get the Canon!!
Get the Nikon..............:)
Seriously, see if you can have a play with both, and get the the one that feels best, or has the easiest menu to negotiate. I'm sure they are both really good camera. I love my D5100
I will be making this same decision one day. I am thinking I may rent each one for a week and shoot all kinds of different styles to give them a thorough test.
You can't go wrong with either one. When i was buying a DSLR, I shot with both the Canon and the Nikon, and the Nikon felt better in my hands. Remember you are buying into a camera system, and both companies make excellent lenses.
i'm using d5100 for a year now and i love it so much:) you just have to try both and then ask yourself which one you like more then choose that one! don't believe what others say.
What Leonie said! I recently upgraded from my old Nikon D50 to the 5100. The only reason I didn't even consider Canon is because I have a few lenses. As far as the difference in megapixels..I doubt you'll ever see the difference. My old Nikon was 6MP and I have some really nice prints from it in the 24X30 range.
Thanks everyone! And thanks @seanoneill for the link to that review. I'm thinking I might just go with the Nikon, as it did feel slightly better and seems to be so loved! Definitely going to have another look at it in the shop.. exciting! Now just to see if I can get that Christmas money in advance... :p
Don't know the cost difference or what a comparable Nikon is but I would seriously look at the Canon 650D. It seems to have quite a bit more features than the 600D.
@tigerdreamer Unless you had instruction from someone knowledgeable with both cameras, you probably wouldn't get much out of using them for just one week. I think that you read the reviews and then follow @stanners72 's advice and figure out which one feel better in your hand.
I when with my Canon after reading several reviews and just holding the Canon. The dials felt right and I feel help me get to where I want to be faster. I just didn't get the same feel with the Nikon.
I love my Nikon D5100, and wouldn't change out to Cannon now. If had started with Canon, I am sure I would say the exact opposite. The only quibble I have at the moment is that the D5100 only processes and stores 4:3 aspect ratio shots. I don't know about the equivalent Canon, but my little Canon SX260 point and shoot has a significant number of choices.
I'm making the exact same decision! I've tried both cameras instore, and I think, from reading all the reviews, I was swaying toward Nikon D5100... but then again, my Grandpa has Canon lenses that he could lend me, so Canon EOS 600D would probably be better... I don't know!
@charlotteee333 The two cameras are APS-C "cropped sensor" varieties. Certainly for the Nikon cameras (I can't speak for Canon) you can use "full frame" lenses, but you are estimating the "crop" from the frame you see in the viewfinder. Check with Grandpa what sort of cameras and lenses he has, if that is a decision point for you.
As you read above, I am a Nikon person, but that is only because I started with them, I am sure. In truth, I don't think you can go wrong with either choice. Good luck, and good shooting!
I am a user of Nikon D5100. Also I had the same situation like yours in last year. Both are great camera. I suggest you to go for feeling of holding it in your hand. Canon did not give me comfortable feeling for gripping and handling. This is very important. If you can hold it comfortable you could not enjoy shooting it.
Furthermore after testing D5100 has the smarter light metering, White Balance and other setting. The way Nikon generates colour and reading the light are so amazing.
After I have been using Nikon D5100 for more than a year there is no single day that I am not happy with it. It is very compact DSLR. The photo quality is so great. I travel a lot and D5100 goes with me everywhere. It's very tough camera as well. I used it under the tough condition with rain and dust. It's still working fine.

Just thought I'd say thanks so much for your advice everyone! And I thought you might like to know, I went with the Nikon D5100 in the end! Had a look again in the shop and I just couldn't resist any longer... it felt right in my hands :D I love it already, although having had a Sony before I am currently baffled as to how to use it, but very excited to get to grips with it over the next few days! Deffo going to step up my efforts and get back on track now :) Thanks again guys! xxx

You could get a Canon 60D for almost the same price as a 600D or 650D!
