Scam?

December 12th, 2012
Today I received a post on my Nov. 1, 2012 photo by a person named Martin Galpin @martingalpin. He's asking permission to use my photos for an obscure project. Hate to post this discussion, but I'm uncomfortable with the situation. The person has posted no photos, and fav'd most of todays popular page entries only. He also choose a random, uninspiring photo of mine to post a message. Wondering if anyone else has received a message from this person. Thinking this is a scam.
December 12th, 2012
Yes me! I was also wondering what to make of it. What kind of a scam do you suspect? Should we tag Ross?
December 12th, 2012
Hmmm ... Weird.
December 12th, 2012
He posted the same thing on my account and faved several of my photos.
December 12th, 2012
Not sure. He also started this thread a couple days ago.

No idea. Honestly, all someone needs to do is copy, clone out any watermarks, and publish the photo as their own. So its odd that the person is actually asking, but odder how they went about it. I've never tagged Ross for anything. Don't know what he could do?
December 12th, 2012
@mikehamm Thanks Mike. Didn't realize. Still...since then, he still hasn't offered anything about his "project" or who he is.

Lyn
Part of what he's done is following the advice of some 365ers who responded to his initial discussion. See Mike's link above. Don't know what to think. . .Ross should be able to suss it out, though. . .

I'm not to sure its a scam because he posted asking how to contact photographers. This is my opinion.
December 12th, 2012
@Scrivna Ross any views on this?
December 12th, 2012
There must be something wrong with this since he hasn't faved any of MY photos... ;)

I'm pretty sure he is just trying to contact people like he mentioned in the discussion he posted. It would be nice knowing what his "project' is about though.
December 12th, 2012
@grizzlysghost Ha ha! Yes it would be interesting to know. Especially to what extent it is commercial.
December 12th, 2012
@grizzlysghost Lmao. Nice Aaron. I found it odd for the exact opposite reason. Why the hell would anyone want one of my photos?

@lyno After seeing the post, I wanna agree with both of you. But, he hasn't explained anything. Just wants permission for the photos. Something seems off
December 12th, 2012
give him the benefit, hes so far just following advice given on the other thread, if he's a scammer or wanting to use the images, he isnt going to ask first, he's just going to take them, lets face it watermarks are a waste of time and can be cropped out or cloned out. - you need to find out what the project is and ask for details, give or dont give consent based on the reply.
i had someone use some of my images recently, they asked first and sent me a copy of what was created using them

I agree with Kylie @kmrtn6 and totally understand all thoughts and feelings on the subject, esp. @grizzlysghost . :D I know I do the exact opposite of what I'm about to say Beau @losthorizon but give yourself some credit. You've got some good work on here and can only improve from here.

But it would be worth finding out more about the project mentioned and making an informed decision if and when Martin provides you with that information. Glad that he is actually making contact first rather than some 365ers finding their work from here posted up somewhere else without their knowledge sometime down the road.

Looks fairly harmless to me, and the first comment on that discussion even recommends leaving comments on older photos.

If you want to share / help this member out, use your best judgement.
December 12th, 2012
@kmrtn6 Thanks Kylie. Appreciate the feedback. Sent a message on the discussion.
December 12th, 2012
@geocacheking Thanks Mr. T. Don't think I'll ever like a photo I take. In truth, the irony is that I delete most of my photos. So if someone wanted a copy, I probably wouldn't be able to provide one Lol.

I actually found a few of my photos online without my permission. But they credited the photos to me, and in the context that they placed them, I wasn't offended. So I didn't bother making anything of it.

Sent a message, we'll have to see if he writes back

@Scrivna Thank you so much Mr. Scrivna. Honored you replied. Sent a message on his discussion. Will have to wait and see what happens.

Looking at the original thread it appears to be legit. Martin gives an email at the end of the discussion if you have any questions for him. I suggest you take him up on that if you want to know more.
December 13th, 2012
Hi everyone

Thanks for your comments - it is very strange reading about myself in this way, but I can understand the suspicion! As others have said above, I have now added more detail to the original thread, and you are welcome to get in touch if you are interested in finding out more. I'm not trying to be secretive, just don't want to clog up your message boards with lots of detail that most people won't be interested in!

No scam here I promise - just simply wanting to ask people's permission to use some of their pictures. I wouldn't want to do that without asking.

I haven't had much time to look through all the photos on this site, so have been starting with the featured 'popular' ones, as that seemed like the most efficient way of seeing the best pictures on here. I have only contacted a very small proportion of people directly, but I'd be very happy to hear from anyone else who might be interested in helping with our project.

Thanks for your support!

@martingalpin Sorry about that Martin. That's on me. Hope no offense taken. There's a great community here, and we try to help and protect our projects. Thanks again for providing more info on your project. And hey, you've already started an account on here. Why not take some photos?
December 13th, 2012
@losthorizon No problem at all :-). I think you were planning on emailing me today so that I could send you some more info, but I don't seem to have received anything as yet. Do you want to drop me a line so I can get details over to you?

Thanks.
