Computer issues if anyone has a suggestion

December 16th, 2012
Not a photo discussion except I use my computer to do 365. I believe Windows updated something a few days ago on my Windows XP. Since then the blue boxes at the top of this page are blank. I can click the boxes but cant see any text. My email (gmail) shows some of the subjects but not who sent or date. Any web site I go to the buttons are blank and some I can click if I know what it is and others dont allow clicking. My Pictures folder in my documents shows all the pictures but now some have 2 little blue arrows on them but they dont do anything different. I have tried restoring to prior date but it wont let me. I have run Norton and it seems fine. I have tried under Microsoft Explorer and Firefox. Just thought since you all have computers someone might have a suggestion. Thank you.

I always fear those updates! I was going to suggest "going back in time" but I see that you have already done that. Have you tried looking for browser updates? I am on a Mac currently so I haven't had this update. Have you tried downloading a different browser? I use Chrome in both Mac and PC platforms.

Did you turn your computer on and off yet? Just kidding, I'm sure that you have, Good luck with this. :-)

Have you tried googling a description of the problem - sometimes people post helpful solutions in discussion forums and you probably are not the only person to have the problem.

You can check on Windows Update on your PC the KB numbers of the fixes applied. If you Google the likely ones for snags and then in add/remove programs (control panel) uninstalll them.

It might not be Windows to blame. Adobe Flash problems sounds possible. Could be worth updating your Flash?

Maybe clear the brwoser cache as well.

Also I would try and update your graphics driver as well.

Hope 1 of these might help.

@jannkc I recommend a large drink. Won't necessarily solve the problem but it often helps my problems to look better.... :)

Is your Javascript disabled?

@5unflow3r @godders @cameronknowlton Thank you- I tried updating Adobe Flash and I didnt have it so I downloaded that, cleared the browser cache, tried updating graphics driver but it said it was fine, loaded Chrome (nice). After loading Chrome my email shows more text than it was but it is like squished and on top of each other. The buttons and links still dont show text. Javascript seems fine. I restarted after each step. Thanks for all your suggestions. Might have to take it to the dr tomorrow. I dont know how to check on Windows Update? What did you mean by that @godders?

I got a feeling it's the graphic driver. I would have suggested flash but you looked into that. You tried other browsers too with no luck. I never allow windows to auto update without asking me first- I actually look at the updates it wants to do. I work in technology so I know what windows updates can do. I've seen it disable entire grocery stores.

What you could do is disable your graphics driver and re-install it. Or better yet pick a driver that's not necessarily the most recent. Also I would get the driver from the hardware manufacture versus Microsoft.

It's difficult to provide advice without seeing the PC.

My $.02.

Hope for the best.... brian

You could start the PC in safe mode & see if the problem is still there. If it is not there then it is more likely a driver problem than a Windows problem. You could uninstall & reinstall the video drivers for example.
Also, you say it won't let you do a system restore, is that because system restore was turned off? That would be an OK explanation but sometimes viruses will prevent you from using system restore so that could be another symptom. Seek professional help if you are not familiar with removing viruses.

I have windows 7 and I use to strictly use FireFox, but it seemed just about every time Microsoft did a Windows update I'd experience some type of problem. I downloaded Chrome and it seems to tolerate Win updates better. It seems after a few days or a week FireFox goes back to normal. But I never experienced what you are experiencing. Try shutting down your computer and leaving it off for a couple minutes. A lot of the time when Windows does an update it reboots, but I wonder if it clears the memory properly.

Jann, to check your Windows update go to Control Panel, Window Update, View update history. I haven't worked on XP is a while so I don't remember exactly how the prompts come up. From this page you can see what was installed and the date. Also if the install was completed.
At the top of the page should be a prompt for removing updates. On Vista it states "to remove an update see installed updates ". The "installed updates" is a link to that page. from there you can remove the updates if necessary.

I believe the most current version of Internet Explorer for XP is version 8.

I found this article on the internet. http://searchsecurity.techtarget.com/news/2240174341/Internet-Explorer-vulnerabilities-fixed-in-December-2012-Patch-Tuesday

I see you've check your flash is up to date, but I'd suggest you also check that your Java Runtime Engine (JRE) is up to date also (Note this is not javascript which is something completely different). To check this, go to

@brianl @david68 @skipt07 @lstasel @homer117 Thank you for all your suggestions. I did try those I was able. The system restore worked in Safe Mode and it improved the problem but did not remove it. I have had it in the shop with a guy I trust and he said we are down to Clean it off and Reinstall the OS. So here goes hoping! Really happy you offered me some excellent ideas of knowledege-thanks
