Fujifilm Finepix HS 30EXR V's S5600... any advice?

January 7th, 2013
Hi all, I will be using both the S5600 to the HS30EXR throughout this project. The HS model is the new addition ... I thought it would operate simliar to my S5600 but its turning out to be a whole new beast to drive! Unfortunately, because I have watermarked my photos on the project through AVS you are not able to see the details of what camera I used for which of my shots!

Any advice you have regarding which is best for what will be greatly appreciated, its turned out to be a bigger learner curve than what I first thought it would be. I also had to get the HS30EXR for commercial reasons .. not as a photographer but for certain work items we have to take photos of in my profession.

Thanks folks!

What exactly are you asking? I'm not particularly familiar with the S5600, but it seems to be a 7-8 year old bridge camera?

The HS30 is a decent bridge camera, one of the best available in the superzoom category. I have the previous HS20 that I got as an alternative to carrying around my DSLR -- the quality wasn't quite good enough for me, but will be more than good enough for most people, and is comparable with high-end bridge cameras from Canon and Nikon.

Looking at the specs of the S5600, I'd be very surprised if there was anything it could do better than the HS30 -- maybe you can clarify your question a bit?

@abirkill Hi thanks, any information in regards to how they compare is great. Thanks for letting me know what you know! :)

Well there's a comparison of specs here, although it's not totally accurate -- the HS30 shoots RAW, which it lists as something only the S5600 does:

But really, it's a bit like comparing a new mobile phone with one released 8 years ago. They're both made by Fuji and they both take digital images, but the HS30EXR is on a totally different level to the S5600. It's got a vastly better lens, a vastly better display, a vastly better sensor, the list goes on and on. It will also be much easier to use, as automatic modes have improved a lot in this type of camera -- you can pretty much leave the camera to decide everything, if you want.

Pretty much the only downside is that it's a larger and heavier camera, almost all of which is down to the much more flexible lens that goes wider, zooms in further, and lets in more light.

@abirkill Thanks again. Hasn't for some reason been easier than the S5600 when it comes to getting clear shots. I find my old S5600 way easier to point and shoot and get clear shots, although I like the bigger lens and the extras like face reg, pull out screen that the HS30 provides, thats all great. Thanks for the link, will have a read.

@jodeewatts Have you got any examples of shots you're not happy with? Are you using the HS30 in auto/EXR mode?

@abirkill using in all different modes dependant on the scene. Todays photo is from the HS30 and the Photo Crystal Clear for instance is the S5600. I dont have to auto correct or crop with the S5600. To me it looks like the colours are over exposed with the HS30 compared to the S5600, I'm wondering if I've mucked up my iso settings perhaps?

@jodeewatts Today's photo doesn't look bad to me, very slight overexposure in the distant sky. Could possibly benefit from a slight increase in saturation, it looks slightly 'washed-out'.

Are you sure you haven't set exposure compensation? If you are finding it's constantly over-exposing, that would explain it (and even if not and you just prefer a slightly darker image, you could dial in a small amount of underexposure correction).

@abirkill, I think you have hit the nail on the head as they say, "slightly washed out" is what I was refering to as 'over exposed'. Will check my exposure compenastion. I think I've overplayed with it if that makes sense and changed settings that I should have left well alone and now cant remember what I changed to change it back, lol! Thanks again Alex
