Enjoying non-digitally?

January 12th, 2013
After a big vacation, I generally do a photo book (I use mypublisher.com - another question, which of these services do you like?) The books serve as a way to enjoy (read that as "show off") my photos as well as a nice souvenir. If other people have been with me, sometimes, I'll make a book for them, too.

But with this project, I can see that I will have a number of photos, likely without a common theme, that I'd like to release from the confines of my hard drive.

So I was wondering what others do? Print and put in an album? Obviously frames for those that might be art for our walls, or family photographs for the mantle. But looking for a creative/interesting way to get what might be called a portfolio together.... On paper. What do you do?

I am hoping to do a book with Blurb, but struggling to arrange the shots.

Print and frame stuff a couple time's a month, never quite understood why people would take photographs without getting them printed? I use a local printer in town, not as cheap as the online place's but at least I know they do quality work.

I also have a leather bound album that contains 10 x 8 print's as my portfolio for taking to shops, cafes etc. for when pimping my stuff to them.

Think DIGITAL FRAME. Constantly changing art which works well for photos you love and without a common theme.

We got one for my father and post a mix of family photos, location shots, birds, flowers etc. He tells me that from time to time, he will go to the living room just to view the photos and sometimes sits there an hour just enjoying the pictures.

I change his array of photos, adding some new, taking out some others everytime we visit, so it is always a little different and he really enjoys the ever changing album.

We have one in our living room which I can keep current with favorites from this project; family and vacations. Limited only by the size of the SD card (and they are cheap!)

You could do themes like just Christmas photos during the holidays; or just summer shots from many years during the summer months.

Anyway, that's what I do to keep my photos alive in our homes.

I want to mount a big 28" LCD on my entry hall wall with a Mac Mini, and push new photos to it. but, that's just a pipe dream.

I did a collage poster of year one. I have a digital frame at work and I hope to frame some of the best this year.

@cameronknowlton Now, Cameron, that really WOULD be showing off!

@jase_h Jase, I'm with you -- I really feel like they (some of them) should be printed, otherwise, why bother.

I'm avoiding the digital frame, in part because life is so digital nowadays, I'm looking for something more tactile. But, I may stick one in my office for those times I need to clear my mind of numbers.

Thanks to all -- some good ideas here.

I'm just about to install some gallery lighting for my 2 Peter Lik photos, they look backlit when properly done. I wanted to do the same with one of my photos, in that one entry hall spot that I can properly use to showcase.

I have a good line at a local repro shop on a very similar paper that he used, so I should get pretty close to the same effect.

The professional photo lighting is going to cost around $700 for the 2 photos, so doing one more is going to cost close to the price of the LCD and Mac Mini... and those would be back lit ;) ... and changeable at a whim.

I'm going to pass the idea by my lighting guy when I bring him in, see what he says. I think power on that wall is going to be the hardest issue, since there's no outlets on that interior wall.

@cameronknowlton tell us how it goes - that sounds really interesting.

I've had good luck with getting outlets installed, so I think you'll be happy with that issue.

And, I'd also be interested in the paper you mention. I love the backlit appearance -- I once saw a photo installation that was all backlit and it has stuck with me ever since.

@ridley Cameron, I'd love to hear if you get the same results with the paper you found. I have two large Peter Lik photos in my house as well that are lit as he recommends, and they look great. I would be curious if you get similar results
