Suggestions on cameras

January 16th, 2013
My husband's office is thinking of getting a camera to use for work purposes. He was told they want a point and shoot type of camera but a decent one. Many people will be using it so they don't want anything too complicated and don't want to have to change lenses; but they would like one that takes pretty decent pictures. Any suggestions?

Panasonic lumix tz models. Not sure what number they're up to, but I've got the 18 (replacement for the 3 which I dropped on the floor!) and I love it.

Indication of budget might be useful

I was responsible for our office camera selection. Our qualifications

Cost (someone will mess it up so under $175, our budget was $400)
Pixels (10 to 12 should do you, anything after that was just extra money)
optical view finder would be nice
memory cards that fit into our computers easily
rechargeable batteries.

We ended up with a Nikon for the first one and a coworker (who is tall and solid) sat on it and broke the LCD screen
We got a second Nikon Cool Shot and the same coworker somehow sat on it again and in trying to fix it jammed the battery door and broke the card
Our final choice was the Olympus Tough and that lasted the longest, but hemanaged to drop it from a second floor and now has been banned from the camera.
We have had our second Olympus tough for about two years with no additional problems. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=&sku=839802&Q=&is=REG&A=details

The Lumix DMC-FZ47 packs a powerful optical zoom and attractive options including manual operation, adding full-HD video recording capability; around $300. I favor it over my Canon Powershot SX40.

Thank you so much everyone. Your suggestions are being very helpful. I have no idea what kind of budget they are thinking of so I will check into the different cameras suggested and make note of the prices and I will pass the information along to my husband.

@phillyphotos Your stories about your coworker destroying cameras are so funny. Sounds like your office has the right idea of not letting him touch a camera again. LOL

@mittens you should have seen the actual office screaming match that occured between the keeper of the supplies and the destroyer of all things nice.

I would suggest something that is rugged especially since it will be used by many and the company owns it. It is the unfortunate fact that not everyone treats company property as they would their own. I may consider something like a Nikon AW100, waterproof and shock proof. If taken in rain or spilled on it will not be ruined and shock proof to prevent drops from destroying it. I have one and it takes great shots... even after my 100 pound black lab chewed on and dented it.

@phillyphotos

maybe that dude wants to shoot film?

I dunno, they're as broad as they are tall. Just make sure you get a good deal from B&H or amazon or adorama or somewhere, the bottoms fallen out of the market because of the i-phone so make sure you get a good deal, don't believe no camera shop fool who tells you a point and shoot is amazing because they just dumb. Fuji do an XP30 which is drop proof and waterproof which I believe is good.
