You know the little plastic caps that slide into the hotshoe to protect the rails and the contacts?
Well I'm losing them. I think the solution is going to be having a few spares in various camera bags. Then at least when I loose one I should be able to find one.
Any recommendations on where to get a little pile of these things at a sensible price?
I used to stress about losing those little caps until I noticed something when watching professionals at work: none of them have the hotshoe protector on their cameras... ever! ;-) Check it out:
The plastic cap is not needed on a DSLR. I removed mine from my Nikon and put it on my LX-3, which makes it much easier for me to slip that compact camera in and out of a pocket.
The cameras I have bought since the Canon T90 some years ago have not come with shoe caps. I do normally get one, just because I think it makes the camera look tidier, and it MIGHT stop some kind of dirt geeting in there. I don't think they are essental though.
@intymalcolm Nikon has lots of waterproof DSLRs - but I chose a less expensive model as I was not certain I would like having a DSLR or not. As it turns out, I love it. But I still don't want to shoot in the rain - lol!

Both of my Nikon DSLRs have been without the annoying little caps for at least 2 years now, and no problem with flash functionality. :-)
