Boundries

January 18th, 2013
This week I have taken some pictures which are to some extent controversial.

e.g. A recently shot deer being butchered and a concert (in which my daughter was performing) where I smuggled the camera into the event!

I'm not looking for a debate about what it is and is not OK to photograph but I am interested in what the boundaries of acceptability are for this site.

Thoughts please?

David

Personally, there shouldn't be any, there was a guy last year who got banned for flaunting himself and his "cock ring".

@jase_h There was? Really? What rock have I been hiding under? lol.
January 18th, 2013
@ozziehoffy Yeah he had only posted a couple of shots and someone started a thread about it. Guess the thread will still be there, no idea what to search for though as I think it was described a bit less bluntly than I just did :)

You just won't let it go will you Jase? I deleted those pics, okay? Sheesh. ;) @jase_h @ozziehoffy

I agree David, there should be no real limits as long as they are not illegal or socially immoral; it will affect your follower base, but sometimes that's a good thing!

@grizzlysghost Dude I wasn't holding IT!!! ;)
January 18th, 2013
@jase_h @grizzlysghost lol you guys crack me up! I think I do live under a rock....I completely missed that one! Mind you I also tend not to read a lot here. I'm so time poor already lol. Did you know it's 2am and I should be asleep!

@daviddobedoe I agree with Jase and Aaron. I've got some shots that I decided against putting here as I didn't want to offend people who follow me. That said, I'd show people.

OK, I've gone for it and posted something that some people might not like. I'm interested in the response (if any?)
January 18th, 2013
@daviddobedoe Eeeeyaaa, that's gross. Not my thing, but to each his own. I saw it, and now am moving on, no problems here! :)
January 18th, 2013
@daviddobedoe I don't have a problem with it. It's a fact of life and photography doesn't need to be limited to 'nice' subjects.

I recently took photographs of needles and works used for shooting up, at a local graffiti spot. I haven't posted the photos anyhwere because im not sure how people will deal with them, i hate to feel restricted by peoples opinions. I have no issues with it, its real life and that was what i saw....

Great to see the comments here. We obviously have some boundaries on the site. The other pictures I took of the deer being sorted I can't put on the site as the people doing the work have asked be not to.
January 18th, 2013
Personal opinion? If you aren't promoting something illegal or immoral and can honestly show the photo to your friends and family, then why not? Controversial subjects aside, if you feel however, it's not something you'd share with your family, why would you put it out on the internet? I was always told, if I can't tell someone about what I'm doing then maybe I shouldn't be doing it. It's that simple.

My only concern is that I generally cruise through here while I'm at work. If something is NSFW I'd rather at least know that in advance so as to not end up getting this site blocked. Artsy nudity is ok but a prince william not so much.

Personally though I wouldn't put anything that has to do with illegal activites online. I don't see an issue with the needle thing if it isn't YOUR shoot up spot. haha I'm trying to think of an example and I fear that my life is just too boring. Kids smoking always gets people excited.

@dmortega and everybody else. I would probably not go out of my way to share this photo with my seven year old vegetarian daughter. I'm not vegetarian and I would however be OK with her to having a look if she wanted to. She does come with me to places where these things happen but usually keeps away.

I'm a vegetarian and wouldn't be offended! (But then I live with someone who regularly brings home dead birds or bambi!) The needles etc ARE part of life nowadays and I would choose to view the pics. Maybe I am just reasonably tolerant. If I don't like the subject matter of a photo, I would move on!

Mel
I've looked and I don't think that image is shocking - mind you I was vegetarian for 7 years and am honest with myself about where meat comes from... in a broader view, I feel often really powerful images can be somewhat shocking - that can be the stuff that makes people think. That doesn't make them 'bad' or unacceptable images in my opinion. Life isn't all chocolate box kittens and pretty sunsets!
January 18th, 2013
@dmortega I agree with you here. :)
January 18th, 2013
@daviddobedoe Saw your pic. It's gross, but I've seen worse. I don't see any reason why it shouldn't be posted though.

There was someone on here a while ago took a whole series of really fascinating photos of road kill. Someone else (a midwife) posted a photo of a placenta too, so I think you're fine. :-)

I can't see a problem with it. I have a dead pre term baby mouse, a fart (uk word for passing wind), a swear word, and my husband naked in my project. All could be considered controversial. I can't recal anyone complaining.

@neveradullmo Probably no different to images we might see on tv.
January 18th, 2013
@daviddobedoe nothing wrong with the picture in my opinion. It wouldn't be something I'd hang on my wall but no reason you can't add it here.

@neveradullmo I'd say post the picture, I used a syringe/needle in my project in 2011 ( http://365project.org/emmar84/odds-sods-and-i/2011-07-16 if you want to look)

@phillyphotos I think you are talking about a different person than @jase_h and @ozziehoffy were discussing.

@kjarn I thoughti deleted my comments already since I realized that. Will go back and delete
