Ceramic class inspiration

January 18th, 2013
Next week I'm going to participate in ceramic class and I'm trying to find some ideas what to do as my first project. Tea cup, coffee mug or plate sounds too cliche and I'd like to create something different. Maybe you have some ideas to share? =)

I made a chime once using very thin ceramic pieces in the shape of leaves. they sounded lovely in the wind.

I have been in pottery class for over two years. I tend to do sculpture. Some of the coolest things I have seen recently are large platters (maybe 14 inch diameter with a shallow dip to them) that are made as wall hangings. Many people are adding a ribbon of clay that undulates across the top or are pressing or carving textures into them.

I tend to make wall hangings about 28" x 12" and cut them into 6 tiles ... that gives you some great opps for adding clay or carving and for creative glazing. You can mount them on wood or plexiglass or stainless steel or attach them together with wire or string (put holes in them before they're dry).

I have a bit of an obsession with triangles (hence my triangles link which I am trying to maintain in my project!) so I made a triangular clock and glazed it with broken bottle shards.
I also made a house number plaque.

Thanks for your responses =) I think I'll mix bits of your ideas with mine (some that I've managed to come up with myself).

@lindaraymond Very interesting idea and outcome! =) I should also think about how to combine my first project with other things (e.g lights, moving parts). Thanks for sharing your ideas =)

@hauss

I hope you enjoy your class. I loved mine, but I took 3 weeks to make each thing when others were turning out 3 projects in one class!!

@lindaraymond In my opinion it is nothing wrong to work with one project for a longer time (no matter if it's because you are still beginner and learning techniques or you are growing your idea bigger and bigger). This way you have more time to notice the details and put more you in it =)

I made a bunch of teaspoon holders (not the big spoon ones) shaped like mini teapots and dried on a tablespoon to get it rounded a bit. My family loves them. I have also made some larger cooking pots for the oven (inside not glazed for non-stick and steam purposes), platters the size of plates, and sushi plates. When it comes to the larger pieces you really have to let them dry slowly as I am sure you will learn.

Have fun! I am just going to be making another larges baking pot here soon. :)

@heidit Seems like you are really into ceramics and enjoy it very much =) I love your ideas because they are simple and practical at the same time. I think this is what I want my first project to be - something that can be used on purpose.

@hauss actually I just did it for the first time this fall and love it! I was given more clay to work with so that is why another pot. The pots are lovely to cook in and the teaspoon holders are very handy. Much nicer than just setting a teaspoon on the side on a plate or napkin. Glad I was able to offer useful suggestions for you
