Buying A Used DSLR

January 24th, 2013
Can someone tell me on a DSLR a little over a year old what would be okay to consider on shutter snaps when buying a used camera?

Do you mean the number of shots it's taken? It would depend on the model. The shutter is rated to last a different length depending on how high-end the camera is, usually ranging between 50,000 and 400,000 actuations.

Google should be able to show you what the rated shutter life is for any specific camera. If it's a cheap camera, then a shutter failure may not be cost-effective to repair, so I probably wouldn't get one that's had more than half of it's expected life unless it was very cheap. For more expensive cameras, a shutter replacement is pretty cheap in the scheme of things.

Remember that shutter life expectancy is an predicted mean figure, not a guarantee -- many cameras will go far past the rated lifetime, some will fail well before the rated lifetime.

@amoment -- Canon t2i -- I googled and it says 100k. Is that good? The camera is used with about 5,000 on the shutter already.

Plenty of life left. Which model is it?

Canon T2i? good for 100K... hmm... at the rate i'm going, i'll be able to justify a new camera in a year or so :)

@abirkill She replied to you, but replied to herself instead....

@l2lumom Thanks! :)

@amoment 100,000 is what all entry-level Canon DSLRs are rated to these days, but it's a pretty good rating. To put it in another context, you would need to take 55 photos every day for 5 years straight to have taken 100,000 photos.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy a T2i with 5,000 actuations if everything else about it looked OK.

Mine had 400, but you're probably not likely to find that anytime soon. 5000 sounds good of the camera it's good otherwise. Where are you getting it from? If it's a shop, do you get any sort of warranty?

@abirkill -- I actually feel like maybe i've recieved a super deal.

I bought the camera...it came with the lens, two memory cards, lens hood, lens extender and a case. I paid $480.00

I got into my photography class yesterday and my instructor was like I've never seen that lens before...so I googled it when I got home and it says the lens sells for $449.00 on Amazon. I was baffled.

It's a 18-135mm ef-s lens.
