New-York advice

January 25th, 2013
Hi !
I'm going to NY in April and would like to know if you have some good place to buy photo equipment ?
And if you have any interesting spot to take pictures of NY in a non classical way, I'm in!
Thanks in advance

@calliopef Assuming you're referring to NYC and not up-state NY, then B&H Photo has their huge store presence in the city. If you've never been there, I highly recommend it.

Central Park is always a great photo spot, and this time of year there will be ice skaters on the ponds. If you're interested in street photos, then the neighborhoods - Greenwich Village, Chinatown, Little Italy - are always great opportunities.

We have a few folks on the site that are from the City, so I'm sure they'll chime in with advice!

B&H Camera is a huge store with the widest selection of stuff I have seen anywhere. www.bhphotovideo.com/

Times Square, obviously. Rockefeller Center and "Top of the Rock" for views north including Central Park. It's touristy, but you can't beat the panorama views from the Empire State Building Observation deck. The library, inside and out. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, inside and out. Central Park itself. Night Citiscapes, especially from Brooklyn and Queens looking west, and Hoboken in NJ looking East. The bridges of NYC, especially the Brooklyn Bridge, often great if you take a boat trip around Manhattan. The churches, inside and out, St Patrick's, St John the Divine, St Barts (Bartholemew that is), Temple Emanuel. Grand Central Station, inside and out.

And that's just for starters. The buildings in NYC, almost anywhere, provide great architecture subjects.

NYC has some amazing photo stores - B&H, and Adorama are probably the two best, but there are plenty more. The city is a photographer's dream, it is very difficult in Manhattan not to find something great to photograph. Here's a small list to get you started: Times Square, Grand Central Station, Chrysler Building, Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center, Central Park (check out the Ramble Stone Arch), Brooklyn Bridge, Union Square, the High Line, Madison Square Park, Flatiron Building, the museums and churches just to start. Also, walk all the cool neighborhoods - Soho, Chelsea, the Village, Gramercy, the Lower East Side, Chinatown - tremendous street photography photo ops are everywhere in Manhattan!

I second @calm 's advice about ME. And since it looks like you aren't following @michaelelliott yet you ought to be. Some great places, beautiful photos, and he recently got a new camera so he may have some good advice too about where to go.

Checking out his work is a definite.

B&H Photo - you can get LOST in there! Enjoy exploring it! I think I walked through with my mouth gaping open the first time I was in there.

I love Danny's (@soboy5) list.

I do love the view from the Top of the Rock, rather than from the ESB. Great view of Central Park from there and a view of the rest of the city, including the ESB and the Chrysler Building (make it shi-ine) and a little itty bitty Statue of Liberty from there.

Oh...St. Patrick's has scaffolding all over it right now on the outside. I went to St. Paul's Chapel of Trinity Church for the first time this trip and it's wonderful. Trinity Church also. Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island are closed for repairs from Hurricane Sandy.

I adore the architecture all over the cities and the reflections of the old in the new.

Have a great NYC experience!!

Visited New York in October 2010, bought my new camera especially as wanted to take lots of photos. All the recommendations here where to take photos are good. Central Park a must ,spent a whole day there , beautiful, Chrysler Building , Grand Central Station . Be prepared to leave your room early and not get back till late. Walk whenever you can as you get some great off the main sites opportunities to take pictures of some local type buildings and people. Get an Excellent Map and learn the map before you go. Also learn as much as you can about the camera you buy before you go. Buy a Spare Battery, its worth it , you don't want to be at the top of The Empire State and run out of power. Buy a couple of extra memory cards as you will take loads of pictures. We were there 5 days and I took well over 1,500 pictures. You will Love it. Enjoy

B&H is a photographer's Wonderland! Make sure to check their website for days/times that they're open. It's run by observant Jews, therefore they close early on Friday and aren't open on Saturday.

You can't go wrong anywhere in NYC for photos. Not only are there the "big" shots, but look for the little shots too.

Staten Island ferry is a good photo platform. Save up for a helicopter ride. Empire State Building. Big Onion walking tours. Grey Line sightseeing bus. Have fun :-)
