Computer for Photography??

September 23rd, 2010
Hey guys! My computer is crashing (dell inspiron 700m- little laptop) and I'm going to go buy a new desktop computer soon- maybe even today. I'm just wondering what features/brands you've found that are best for storing, viewing, and editing photos. Any suggestions or input?

Thanks in advance!!

The computer itself won't be that important as far as working with images goes, the only real thing you need is storage space - so go for one with a nice big internal hard drive, and get an external drive for backups too. Diskspace (in terms of the amount needed to store small/medium files like photos) is stupidly cheap these days.

The only other thing is software, for editing/organising your photos - depending how pro you are, you could buy one of Adobe's products like Photoshop (very pro, and quite pricey) or the photographer-oriented (and flippin' sublime for basic stuff and organising your photos, and cheaper) Lightroom.

I would add that if you intend to use something like the latest photoshop or lightroom, from my own experience get a fast processor. i have a relatively new PC but i still find that it slows down a little when i'm mass editing.

I don't know where you're based, but some laptops supplied by PCWorld here in the UK are coming with Photoshop Elements pre-installed. I don't know if they're doing the same thing with desktops, but it might be worth looking, but I wouldn't take it into account as a main point when it comes to choosing.

I use a Mac, and I pretty much edit all of my photos directly inside of iPhoto. Then again, I am by no means a professional!
But seriously, I really love iPhoto. It's really convenient. c:

I use both an iMac and a dell laptop. Both seem to work fine but the iMac's screen is amazing! That said i'm still trying to figure out how to get the lightroom modifications from my laptop to the iMac now that i'm almost over my travels.

Agree with the above though.. whichever one you go, since you're doing image manipulation, get the best processor, RAM and biggest hard disk you can

Thanks so much everyone! I actually went with an iMac- @ Weng the screen IS amazing- but I had a meeting last night so I haven't had a chance to get the software loaded.

Your suggestions were very helpful to me- hopefully to a few others as well!
