i don't think the one i have is sturdy enough to hold a lot. it does pretty well with my canon xsi and my smaller lenses but idk if it could hold with my 70-300mm on it.
it's just a 20-25 dollar tripod that i got at walmart. i will upgrade someday but for the price it's not too bad.
I have the gorillapod and I do love it. However, if you want a more extendable tripod rather than a tabletop one, my husband has a manfrotto and it supports his 20D + big lens really well. It's sturdy but light and easy to transport.
Alright well this isn't the lightest but it is certainly strong, it has a tri head instead of a ball head but I plan to upgrade down the line. For the money you can't complain, yes its expensive compared to the Best-Buy and Wal-mart ones but its cheap compared to the Manfrotto and I doubt the Manfrotto are any stonger but probably much lighter. I like it, I have taken it out but woulld not take for a hike, I have a cheapy $20 tripod for that if need be. http://www.amazon.com/615-315-Professional-Photo-Tripod-Panhead/dp/B0002EXF38/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1265404425&sr=8-2
i have a used bogen that I use.. it's very old but very substantial.. supports my 40d and which ever heavy lens that I choose.. look around for one used.. you might have some luck!
you may already know this, be sure to never have the tripod on a camera with a heavy lens. A heavy lens ahould have a tripod mount on the lens. The camera face can in time distort if a heavy lens is on it without the support being on the lens.
I keep a bag of dried black-eyed peas in the car and use it to prop and stablize the camera for self-timer pics. Obviously, this is for my little pocket camera. :-D
i was looking at gorillapods on amazon (because i like the idea of them and such) and they had such mixed reviews. i'd love to hear opinions of anyone that has one about the pros and cons of it. for my dslr (nikon d80) i noticed they have the slr gorillapod, and also an additional head to attach. is the additional head necessary, or is it just fine without it? all out of curiosity, of course :)
One thing that I have is a monopod (only one leg) I put my camera on it, set the automatic timer, raise overhead of obstacles in front of me, and point in the direction that I want a shot. I might look a little silly, but it works to get a shot that no one else can get, unless they have a monopod as well.

and so far I'm very happy with it.
It's always done me well
A few of my friends have manfrottos and they're supposed to be pretty good
great tripod... also a great price for a ball head.
