What would you like?

November 4th, 2010
Hello friends.

I tend to lurk about the discussion boards quite a lot, absorbing all the comments, complaints and questions that come along, now I would like to ask you guys for your opinion...

What would you like to see here on 365 Project?

Obviously it's important to keep the site focused on the pictures, any suggestions around better ways of finding new photos or finding new people to follow would be great.

I'm also open to recommendations you have concerning any part of the site, design, Ace membership, some niggly thing that's ben bugging you, you name it! I'm not promising that your suggestions will get implemented, but it cant hurt to ask right?

Thanks :-)
November 4th, 2010
A button for ace members labelled "add this photo to popular page" bwahaha!
November 4th, 2010
Erm.. can't really think of anything other than when you scroll down the pics in your home page and click on one, when you then return to the home page, you start back at the top - if you could return to the previous location that would be good.

November 4th, 2010
@eyebrows haha! this is really funny, Steve! :-)
November 4th, 2010
@eyebrows You rascal, you :P
November 4th, 2010
@Scrivna I think the site is perfect as it it, Ross! I really loved the Interviews you've been doing - it would be great to have some more of these :-)
November 4th, 2010
+ this thread has somehow put the Freedom Isn't Free song (from Team America) into my head
November 4th, 2010
@slava @indiannie_jones :P

Yeah, the secret hidden message of my stupid joke is that I really can't think of anything. Comment reply notifications were the only thing I was after, and we have those now.
November 4th, 2010
Ed
I want the moon on a stick ...

(*waits for someone to photoshop the aforementioned request*)
November 4th, 2010
@eyebrows I don't want anything either, except for Ed to get the moon on a stick. That'd be real swell.
November 4th, 2010
Agreed with @slava would love to see those interviews again!
November 4th, 2010

November 4th, 2010
@Scrivna I would love to see an updated discussions section. I feel like this message board is way behind in the "Forum World" as far as technology. There is no good way to search the forum for anything or have an easy way to see the latest besides the side bar. Also the date stamp on posts should be a date AND time stamp :)

The discussion boards are a real big part of the site and its where a lot of us seek information and conversation, why not have it updated?!
November 4th, 2010
NIggly thing here: Sometimes I am looking for a particular person on this site and the only option is to scroll down the list of friends or followers. This list is not in order by name and it is frustrating to try to find a particular name on the list.
November 4th, 2010
Ok I know this sounds like a strange ask - but I would like all the pictures filled in on the calander when I bring it up ie. the blank spots for the previous and following month (if possible) I just love looking at a full square of my pics!!
November 4th, 2010
@dmortega
I agree, it would be cool to be able to scroll through a whole list of members, showing both their display name and the username they signed up with (since sometimes they differ quite a bit).
November 4th, 2010
Agree with Hednod! :-) but you're doing a sterling job Ross. Few more interviews would be good with the suttle pros scattered across the site.

There seems to be mixed opinions on the new camera info button. Really don't know what the big "who har" is, it was there before, the difference being you had to click more details button.

Oh and agree with what Andy said about taking back to exact location on page
November 4th, 2010
maybe an "advanced search" kind of feature? to combine browsing by tags, date, & popularity, where you could search, for example, photos tagged with "xyz" uploaded between mm/dd/yy and mm/dd/yy; or photos tagged with two keywords.
November 4th, 2010
@andycoleborn @azza_l What browser are you guys using? Remembering scroll position is a browser thing rather than a site thing, and I've just toyed with this in firefox (I usually open all images in tabs so never go "back") and even hitting the "Load Older Posts" link it managed to remember my scroll position.
November 4th, 2010
Lots of newbies, and even not-so-newbies, don't realise their pictures have reached the popular page unless a viewer happens to mention they saw it there. What about a notification that lets us know when one of our pics has been featured there? I know lots of people get quite thrilled when they find they've been on the pp and it's often a motivation to improve your skills. This may be too difficult to implement, but just a thought.
November 4th, 2010
@eyebrows IE mate...you're right could be eaiser opening in new tabs. I've got it set to open web pages in new tabs but never works. Dam you Billy G !!
November 4th, 2010
@girlie ---- Robin!!! A special note on the picture page if it made the popular page, even for a moment, would be great. Yes, even just a star would be cool! I love stars!
November 4th, 2010
I agree with the notification when something hits the pop. page, awesome idea.
November 4th, 2010
Wow Ross....you're gonna be busy !
November 4th, 2010
Think the site is great as it is, but I'd like to be able to search for a user in the search box, rather than just searching for tags. I also like what was said about having an option to sort follwers/friends by alphabetical order, rather than the order we followed in.
November 4th, 2010
@azza_l Yeah, tried it in IE myself just now - because the "Load Older Posts" changes the content of the page, and IE is and idiot, when you go Back (which loads the original page afresh) and the older posts aren't there any more, it can't figure how far to scroll to, so just stays at the top. It's one of the downsides of dynamically loading content, but I didn't know IE handled it so badly!
November 4th, 2010
Or rather, I didn't realise firefox handled it so damn smartly. If I wrote a browser it'd be doing exactly what IE does :P
November 4th, 2010
@girlie yeah, good idea!
November 4th, 2010
@eyebrows Cheers for that... I so not a geek and would never have thought of that... Should of asked my girlfriend's son... when he raises he head from his mac that is!!!
November 4th, 2010
Ross, I think something that would be very important would be to allow the winner of the weekly theme to be the sole judge to choose the 5 entries for the theme they picked. When a person picks a theme, they may have something in mind, or they would like to see how other's creative license works with their idea.

Think about it?

As always, thank you.
November 4th, 2010
@moncooga --- Seems like a reasonable suggestion. The previous winner picks the theme and the 5 top pictures for us to choose from. Good idea!
November 4th, 2010
@dmortega that was the one thing I thought of too. I started tagging my pictures with my name so that if you put andifree in search I would come up, but an easy way to find a friend would be AWESOME
November 4th, 2010
@eyebrows I've yet to download firefox since re-building my laptop, but will do
November 4th, 2010
@moncooga @dmortega : splendid idea!
November 4th, 2010
What if you would feature someone new to the site every day or week? It would give us a chance to view their work that we might not have otherwise and a chance to get to know the newbies.
November 4th, 2010
This may sound weird,but A CHATROOM :)
...and perhaps a 50 bucks prize for photo of the month? :)

..but you should keep it simple,it would be a shame to become just another stone-cold,complex website full of ads.
November 4th, 2010
@ladedacie Ive started doing that every Saturday myself on my page call it my Saturday Special & put up someone i have found during the week with a little amount of followers etc
Im really happy with the site but yeah a star or something once a picture has appeared on the pp would be cool x
November 5th, 2010
I've been thinking about this since you mentioned it in that other thread.

Just a little one for me - when someone posts a link in a thread, under their photo etc, could it be set to default to target=blank? I think it's just that I'm so used to it being the default on other sites. Personally I'd like it on all the links (I open everything in new tabs anyway) but I can see where that would annoy many other people. But when a link is posted by a member, or any link to an external site, I think it could add some user-friendliness.

Now, this other thought may be too flickr-esque (or facebook-esque), but I wouldn't mind the ability to tag other members in my photos. So if someone clicked on my profile, for example, they could see photos of me taken by Koshi. If that seems dangerous, perhaps a simple yes/no message in notifications as to whether or not you accept the tagging of yourself, or an exceptions list where you can choose, from your contacts, who can tag you. Is that becoming too "social" and less "photography" in style? I wouldn't be upset if everyone else shouted a resounding "no" to the idea.

Another thought I had was an ability to send a PM. Even if they expired after a certain time (24 hours after being read?) - just so people could keep things private (email addresses, etc). You could keep the inbox/sent mail size very small, and even the character limit of the messages, to encourage people to go to email etc. The only thing I'm not sure of is if that would create database headaches or allow spammers access they don't have now.

Other than that, I support the idea of a notification for the popular page, and an alphabetising of the contact lists. I think the site works very well, and would much rather it be elegant and simple than complicated and potentially buggy. What you've built to date is quite remarkable, and I for one would not be worried if nothing changed. :)
November 5th, 2010
I've always wished there was a slideshow type thing, whether related to your faves or the pop page or those you follow, just to make it easier to view all those beautiful, funny, clever, stunning pictures that appear every day. Other than that I'd have to say 365 is just perfect already and just about the best place in the world wide web.
November 5th, 2010
@jinximages think you may have opened a can of worms for yourself :) with a mailbox idea, so many of us who value your expertise will be calling on you more frequently :) hehe
November 5th, 2010
@rebcastillo77 Haha! :) I don't mind giving out my email address. I've just noticed a dramatic increase in spam emails since posting it in a comment which to me is indicative of bots trawling for email addresses on the site. Of course, it could be from something else (maybe my website actually became popular!) but the timing seems indicative. For me, I'd just like the PM system so I could send my email address without it being swiped by Nigerian scammers. Though I could just ramp up my spam-mail software, it's probably more problematic for most other members here if their email address or other info gets parsed by a bot.
November 5th, 2010
I'd like you to take my 365 photos for me, Ross...
November 5th, 2010
I would like to see the comments reversed under each photo so when you come in to view and comment on one, you are commenting directly under the picture. If I have to scroll down 5 pages to leave my comment I sometimes forget what it was that I liked about the picture!

a "Back to the top" link between every 5th comment would be nice too !
November 5th, 2010
@girlie Robin , I like that idea of a notification of a picture hitting the popular page.... Maybe a ''star' or 'p' for 'popular' under the picture would be great.
November 5th, 2010
lol I just read all the comments. If Ross implements just 25%, he'll be one busy man.

All kidding aside, Ross, I simply love 365. Thank you for starting it!
November 5th, 2010
Ross you do a great job but if I could change anything it would be fresh eyes on nominations. This does not mean you do a bad job. I think you do rather well under the work load you seen to carry.

I understand this to be just as big a task as doing it all yourself but the balance may prove worth it.

You do a great job and I am very happy to be able to share this place you have created.
November 5th, 2010
Could you give me a DSLR so I can make better photos and maybe get on the popular page?

Seriously, this is an amazing site and you do a great job. I love it here. This site has become my passion in the last 6 months.
November 5th, 2010
I would love to have the ability to search for an individual 365r and not just searching by tags/themes but most of all be able to pay for an ace membership with a personal credit card rather than paypal. Other than that this sight is perfect.
November 5th, 2010
Love 365 and wish so much I had started it at the beginning of my journey here in Patagonia. I would absolutely agree with the suggestion of a Pop Page notification. I also like the suggestion about a slide show. I've already been thinking ahead to what I will have when the year is up......and a slide show would be marvellous, even if it was an Ace perk.

There aren't enough thanks for the outlet and interaction this site has given me.....
but I'll try. Muchas gracias.
November 5th, 2010
I like Doreenas idea about a star or something when your photo hits the pp! good idea
November 5th, 2010
I know most of these have been mentioned, but I feel like maybe it can't hurt to just say yes, I agree with this or that one. You do an AMAZING job, as this is by far my favorite website on the web. It's so much fun and it really helps to grow a person's skills too. It is a lot to handle, and sometimes I (and many others I am sure) fall behind, but that's alright.

My suggestions are DEFINITELY to have a notification or "star" symbol on a photo that has made the popular page or the homepage. I would LOVE to know.
To be able to search for a member's real name or display name is a great idea also.
Those are the only things I think would really improve the "365project experience" if you will...

As far as preference - I loved the interviews!!!
November 5th, 2010
@wndswptlady - I was thinking the same thing re commenting at the top of the page directly beneath the photo and/or a 'back to top' link :)
November 5th, 2010
Hey Ross ~ I'd like to take this opportunity to say thanks for all of your hard work and for asking our opinions to make this site our heart's desire.

I totally agree with the suggestions made above to be notified when your picture has made it to the popular page, either something temporary like a notification in your inbox or a star or P somewhere on the date itself. I think most people feel a certain level of pride & excitement about having a picture make it the popular page and they miss out on this little nod to their photo if they do not know that they made it to the pop page.

I also agree with the PM option. Some people have very personal, private subject matter that you might want to ask them more personal questions, but feel it might be inappropriate to ask questions that are not meant to be shared as general knowledge for all users of this site.

I have to agree with the other suggestions to have the person who picks the theme get to choose the Top 5. I think that is a really neat idea...could also help you focus on possibly implementing some of these suggestions that you asked for instead of scrolling through 20+ pages of entries.

Lastly, I applaud all of your efforts to make this wonderful site all that it is! I love 365 project & don't know how I ever survived w/o this site and the amazing community that you have fostered to come together!
November 5th, 2010
Oh, also...For ACE members, I'm not sure the formula to figure out your top rated pics...but mine seem rather wonky. I was wondering if you could explain the Top Rated Photos and if it could be 20 instead of 10. (just a thought) : )

Thanks again Ross!
November 5th, 2010
Personally, I have found a large number of the people I follow from the Browse->Latest page. Something about it's true randomness that has me checking it when like minded photographers are uploading I guess. It's only drawback is that it is limited to one page. Implementing pagination there would be killer.
November 5th, 2010
Ross, this site is SO cool, you've done a magnificent job--kudos! But since you asked, I would love to see a "Theme" item under the Search menu. Also, I have found some fantastic photos on the "Suggestion" page for Ace members, but might like it better if it refreshed only when I ask it to--sometimes I don't get to see a photo that I want to check out because there's more than one I want to see, but when I return to the page after checking out one, the other(s) is no longer there. And I love some of the other ideas folks have come up with: search by screen name; PP notification...

Truly awesome job on the site--WTG!!!
November 5th, 2010
@moncooga @girlie

LOVE both of these ideas! Thanks, Ross, for being willing to consider suggestions =)
November 5th, 2010
I would like to know how has favored my photos,,and I would like to be notified if I am on the popular page. Sometimes the only way I know if I have reached the popular page is because someone tells me.
Thanks
November 5th, 2010
First, thanks Ross for this wonderful website. In my opinion, it should stay simple and as you said, focused on pictures.

I know some of this already been said, but I think that if it's said more than once, there is maybe a bit more chance to be implemented ? :)

- I would like a way to search for a person (username), instead of only being able to search for pics.
- Some things bugs me a bit about the discussion board: The same topics coming back over and over again. Maybe there could be sub sections (ex: tips for a specific kind of photo shoot) or a search function for the discussion board? Also, I love the "recent discussion" links, but sometimes I miss some discussions. Maybe add a "see older", a bit like pics on the home page?
- I agree with the popular page notification
- I disagree with any money / material reward.
- I don't know if this would be complicated, but I would like to see a full list of all the existing tags. I don't tag my pics, partly because I don't always know what to write, and because I think it would be useless to have only my pic with this tag. Plus it could be a great way to find more pics / users.
November 5th, 2010
Oh, and I almost forgot. Unless I'm just missing something obvious, is there or could there be a way to readily tell which album I'm in? You are Da Man!
November 5th, 2010
One thing I notice is that there are many pictures uploaded that are pure art. Great photographs but not necessarily telling me anything about the photographer or their life. I fully accept that's an entirely legitimate way of using this site, however, I joined 365 project to try and document 365 days of my life through photographs & I'm sure many others do too.

I think a facility whereby photographers can tag either themselves or one of their albums as containing this kind of day to day pictures would be good because personally, those are the people who I most want to follow and those are the pictures of most interest to me, the mundane, the day to day minutiae of peoples everyday lives.

Cool site though and thanks for all the hard work. :)
November 5th, 2010
One other thing I thought was that it would be really cool if you could look through all the entries for the theme without having to go to everyone's page all the time, like maybe you could scroll through them at a larger size or if they enlarged when you hover on them, like they already do on the popular page.
November 5th, 2010
@jinximages To avoid spambots grabbing your email address in future, use mailcatch.com to create a temporary address, paste that in the comment, when the person emails it, just reply to them from your real one. :)

@hopeless I'm sure paypal accept regular credit card payments now too, don't they?

@aikiuser You can fix your "suggestion" page woes by opening the images you click on in a new tab instead, in the short term, so the existing page is still there unchanged when you close the new tab :)
November 5th, 2010
@Scrivna I'd like to have the option to enable/disable the "Details" features.

For example, today I noticed that the "More Sizes" options. While it's not too hard to grab and reuse an image online without permission, I don't see the point of making it super easy for people to do so.

I would like the choice to opt into these things rather than having what are essentially privacy issues changed after joining. This site has been a refuge when compared to something like Facebook, which routinely ignores basic privacy concerns, and I would like it to remain that way.
November 5th, 2010
h
@andycoleborn I agree on this one.
November 5th, 2010
h
@girlie Definately a good idea!
November 5th, 2010
I read a lot of the responses and saw some mentioned something about a "search" feature. I agree, I think that would be a nice addition. Having a way of searching a person (like on facebook) would be reallllyyy helpful. That way I can find people easier!

The other thing I think would be cool would be bigger displayed pictures.
I just feel like the size of picture 365 allows us to display totally takes away from the photo! well, not takes away... but I'd love to see some pictures a tad larger... that way more detail will be evident. ... hmm. or would this slow the site down too much?

Idk. Just suggestions :) I feel like the site is already awesome... you're just trying to make it "awesomer" :)
November 5th, 2010
@becky the "More Details" feature has been on the site since day 1, no privacy details have changed since you joined.
November 5th, 2010
@eyebrows Thank you! That is pure awesome! :D
November 5th, 2010
November 5th, 2010
I think one of the one of the changes I would like to see implemented is the ability to return to the previous photo after viewing the large one and commenting. If you follwo a large number, it is a real pain to scroll all the way through the selections. And another would be the ability for Ace members to select a popular photo, but let's make it, after the photo has three or five stars, then it goes to the popular page. That would make it more of a significant choice based on the quality of the photo, rather than just a random pick.
November 5th, 2010
To clarify my last suggestion, in order for a photo to make it on the popular page, three to five people must first tag it as a favorite. Then it would go to the popular page.
November 5th, 2010
@digitalrn hi, there is already a fairly complex algorithm behind the popular page, it's definitely not just a random selection. No member will ever be able to choose what goes on that page (not even i can do that, it's all automatic)
November 5th, 2010
To be honest, I think this site is perfect. It isn't overwhelming, and more importantly (and unlike Flickr) it feels like a community. Which to me is really the draw.
November 5th, 2010
@Scrivna So that's a no to Steve's 'add to PP' button?
November 5th, 2010
I LOVE Richard tyson's idea about a slideshow for viewing my favs!!! I love going through my favs list, and enjoying the photos, but it kinda sucks to have to go back to my list and click on a new one! YOU SHOULD DEFINITELY CONSIDER THIS SUGGESTION! And, thank you for this thread! :D
November 5th, 2010
@rich57 - yeah, I'd agree the site is pretty amazing the way it is. By far my favorite site that I frequent. As I said its a feeling of community. People are really here for the right reasons. And the user experience is clean. Which is always appreciated.
November 5th, 2010
Already a great site! But i would like a 'random' button that you click on which takes you to a different 365 member everytime you click on it. That way all the newbies can be discovered!
November 5th, 2010
Hi Ross, I want to thank you for creating and maintaining this amazing site, it has been absolutely a joy for me to participate this project. the only improvement i would like to see is that if we could go back to the previous spot after we view the photo, when you are following lots of people, it is slightly a pain to have to start all over again and scroll all the way down to the photo you just viewed. sometime i have to choose only view the thumbnail and skip the wonderful story people wrote just because i don't have enough time to go back and forth. Other than that, i think you did a fantastic job. i'm so happy to be part of this community. thank you for all your hard work!
November 5th, 2010
An Iphone app would be great, everything else I think should be about the photos.
November 5th, 2010
Hi, Ross, The only thing I go looking for and don't find is a clue to what part of the world people have taken their pictures in. Most people take pictures of where they live. If there was something to indicate at least what country they are in I would love it! I find myself going to the profile and so often being disappointed. Thank you for 365!!
November 5th, 2010
@Scrivna I wasn't referring to "More Details," but rather the new categories under "Details," ie "More Sizes" and "Cam."

When I joined, you were not providing code to encourage people to embed the images I've posted here onto other websites. I definitely consider this a privacy issue and at odds with the spirit of the Terms & Conditions, which says:

"Your images are yours and yours only, you can remove them any time. ... We will only use your images on this site."

November 5th, 2010
@becky I've been on here since January, the code for the picture sizes has always been here. If you're an Ace member you can access the full size images if you ever lost them :-) (only your own though)

However I do see your point, but I don't think it encourages anybody on here to post pictures elswhere, it's not that sort of community.
November 5th, 2010
@azza_l Okay I will stand corrected ... I never noticed the sizes code.

But it certainly seems the point is to encourage embedding--otherwise why provide the means to do so?

If you click on somebody's pic, it says "you can embed them onto your own website." which can reasonably be interpreted as permission to use the photo--even though 365project doesn't have the rights to the pic and therefore can't give permission to others to use it.
November 5th, 2010
@becky Ok yea I do you see your point if a non member of the site might stumble across a picture and has access to it, but at the same time its no different then some one Right Clicking, and choosing Save As I guess
November 5th, 2010
@fysmith @digitalrn If you open the new photos you look at in new tabs, that problem goes away :) And the only reason you have the problem, is the browser you're using - Firefox (at the least) will scroll to the right place.
November 5th, 2010
I started my 365 days on August 1st of this year and love this format and the ability to see a month at a time! My calendar really is turning into a photo-diary of my life. And the tips and hints I've picked up here from the discussions and comments... well, I'm learning and enjoying and really don't have any suggestions for changes right now. Just want to say thanks for a great photo-sharing website!
November 5th, 2010
My only niggle has been covered by Andy C above - I would like that the site take you back to your spot on your home page after you click on a picture (instead of putting back at the top again). Facebook does the same thing and it makes me crazy. I spend half my life scrolling down to find where I left off.
November 5th, 2010
I haven't checked recently so this may be a redundant question.... but the ace site didn't take "debit card" so I couldn't sign up... must check because that may have changed.
November 5th, 2010
I need a place to seach for a person. And I would love not to have to scrolling my homepage all the time :-)
November 5th, 2010
I agree with Andy...It's so time consuming to always start again from the beginning and find where you left off when like he said you clicked on some picture and then have to start all over again from the top.
Also is there a way to let us know why some of our followers or the once we following are no longer with us on 365.. we are curious to find out what could have happened to hem.
November 5th, 2010
@clarissajohal @Scrivna Two things regarding the popular page and the top 20;

Popular page: Perhaps we could have an unpopular page to help get some views on the unknown or under appreciated photos.
Top 20: One solution may be to have a categorized top 20. i.e. top 20 for users with 500+ followers, top 20 for 100-499 followers and top 20 for < 100 followers.

I realize that all of this work falls on your shoulders Ross. If you haven't already, you should consider implementing admin user privileges with an interface into generating some of this content. Delegation is a beautiful thing.
November 5th, 2010
Love 365. It's already been mentioned, but I too would like it so that when you click on a photo from your home feed, and return to it, it takes you to the previous position, not the top.
Please make all the photos in the Top 20 large. Those Bottom 10 thumbnails don't do any justice.
Is it me, or is it just strange that you can comment on a photo based on the thumbnail in the home feed? Wouldn't that increase your comment stats and decrease your view stats.
When you view someone's photo, make the 5 thumbnail photos below them bigger so they match the width of the two columns below. Outside the home feed, thumbnails in general seem to be really small.
It wouldn't be beneficial to me, but I'll throw it out anyhow. Perhaps some people who receive 100+ comments a day would prefer to have a daily or hourly summary email instead of 100 emails filling their inbox.
Add a setting to be notified by email when someone mentions you in a comment.
I could be wrong, but when someone deletes a comment because they found a typo, then repost it, it counts as two comments.
Please please give me a setting to change the calendar layout from Monday-Sunday to Sunday-Saturday.
Make it so you can Follow someone in the Mobile version.
I don't know if it's just me, but when you click View Large to see someone's profile picture, it doesn't let you close the picture that pops up. I always have to hit the back button. Maybe give it a close button like the More Detail pop up.

By the way, I just want to say how thankful I am for this project. What a fun and wonderful experience! I enjoy giving/receiving comments, and stretching myself to be creative. Even if you don't implement any of these, I truly appreciate your team.

@eyebrows ,oh sweet! thanks for pointing it out to me. Paypal has changed a lot since it first came out. Used to be you had to create an account which was why i hadnt become an ace member yet. wasn't interested in a paypal account. Now this site is perfect. =D
November 5th, 2010
Ross, can you make the rain go away so I can get outside and take photos? :P
November 5th, 2010
More objectivity when it comes to which pictures get selected for the theme voting and the top 20s of the weeks and things.
November 5th, 2010
I would like to know exactly how photos are picked for Top 20 and the popular page - no more talk of monkeys please...

And I would like to say that this site is great - keep up the good work!
November 5th, 2010
Is it me, or is it difficult to search for subject on the discussion board?
November 5th, 2010
A few ideas. Some definitely better than others and some that are open for debate, but ask you shall receive Ross :).

1) Not sure if this was mentioned already, but I find myself ctl-clicking and selecting Open Link in New Window (I'm a mac guy) since if I don't, I have to start all over again viewing everyones photos. So, Scroll > Load Older Posts > Scroll > Load Older Posts, and then say when I click on a thumbnail, I can't return to where I left off. My work around is to always view photos in a new window. Maybe an ajax type window would be nice.

2) It would be great to also set a priority group that I can define so that those photos show up first. I follow about 300 people and would love the ability to see my favorite 20-30 friends first. Being selfish I know.

3) Ability to send private message. Today I make a comment, wait, and then delete the comment.

4) Ability to expand the photo description without having to link to the actual photo (similar to the way you can expand to see all the comments).

5) A "Like" button. Would fuel the pop page, but cut down on the generic "Nice Shot" comments that I am so guilty of myself.

6) Ability from my follower list to see if I am in turn following them (similar to Twitter)

7)Same for my friend list, ability to see if they are following me

8) Some of the information The Steve coded would be nice here too. So on my friend list the ability to see last upload date to identify zombies.

9) When looking at the home feed, I sometimes wish it would show just the most recent uploaded photo for a particular person. So in other words, when people haven't loaded a photo for a week and suddenly post several photos, show just the most recent with a "more" link.

10) In discussions, ability to opt-in for notifications of follow-up responses. Similar opt-in ability when I leave a comment on a shot, might be nice to be notified if that photo owner posts a follow-up comment.
November 6th, 2010
@mrjacob Those are interesting solutions--I applaud your efforts to come up with them.
I just saw a post by Ross regarding the Top 20 and feel bad for complaining now. (I had posted that it would be nice to see new names/those with few followers up on the Top 20 list, blah, blah.) He's right, he can't please everyone. I can't even imagine the responsibility of keeping this site running. No pressure there, folks!!
Might I suggest a Newbie page? Kind of like the Popular Page but used to showcase new people one month or less into their Project. Would this be possible to extend to the Top 20 as well? Top 20 Newbies?
November 6th, 2010
...and I want a pony too.
November 6th, 2010
...and world peace.
November 6th, 2010
365 is so special and is like a community - thanks for setting it up and maintaining it. It is a most fantastic project. I started out using the reply button so I could acknowledge that someone else had already said what I was thinking, but had to give up 1/2 way through. It is a brilliant site, but if improvements could be done, these are my suggetions:

- @andycoleborn: ANDY that's a great idea - need to be able to navigate more
easily between the home page and the images you click on.
- @dmortega, @sarethephotos, @wellbride, @jinximages : I too would like
better people tracing mechanisms or alphabetically for friends
- @kdwy, @wormentude, @andifree : more defined search mechanism is a
great idea, either by tags etc,
- @girlie, @cadair8, @kdwy, @lovesscrapn, @redfl83, @jinximages ,
@wndswptlady, @dosmanoisabel, @iridecentburden : letting people know
they are on the POP would be immensely helpful and motivating.
- @moncooga, @barrymikhal : Love the idea that the winner picks the next
theme and judges.
- featuring newcomers is a great idea.
- @rich57: I love the slide show idea for pop page and for your won favs.
- @wndswptlady , @pocketmouse : I have also found you have to keep
returning to and from a pic as you give feedback and have the image above
the box you are completing would be brilliant.
- I would like to know who has favoured by pictures.
- I would like an option for sticking 100% to uploading a pic taken on the day
every day and those who recognise they might only be able to part do that due
to commitment or broken cameras etc.
- Love Gill'sd 'mark as seen' and collapsing those on the home page.
- while looking through these I would have liked to have returned to the last
member I was at.
- I would also like to see 'runners-up' in the winners of themes, as in the weekly top pictures.

Once again, thanks for a brilliant site.
November 6th, 2010
@clarissajohal that's a great idea! A separate page to showcase new users! Thanks! I've also been thinking about a page that showcases "people" that might be worth following rather than photos, what do you think?

@lintbrush you da man, some great suggestions there, 2 (interesting feedback thanks), 6&7 (we used to have, not sure why i removed it) , 8, 9

Other points I like very much...
- search is clearly something everyone wants improved and expanded
- friend lists need work
- improved discussion board functionality, some specific ideas would be useful, no emoticons! :-p
- slideshows (or something similar) for certain collections
- theme entry selection needs work
- moon on a stick @edpartridge
- featured users (people loved the interviews so could be a more permanent fixture?)

I'll see what i can do about the dashboard back button issue as a million people have mentioned it.
November 6th, 2010
@rayray The top 20 is as objective as it gets. Purely based on statistics, not Ross' opinion.

Theme nominees on the other hand are completely subjectively chosen by Ross and/or his friends (per one of Ross' comments). Algorithms can only choose popular photos, not necessarily good photos. Even if he expanded the number of judges it would come down to each of their individual tastes in the art of photography which may never agree with our personal favs.

@lily I would also like to know the algorithm for the popular page. I have seen photos with less than ten views and only 1 comment on the popular page as well as the hundreds of views and comments photos...
November 6th, 2010
@hopeless @Scrivna Ross I demand commission! :P
November 6th, 2010
oh yah...and I want to eat a mountain of chocolate, without gaining an ounce!
November 6th, 2010
I find it interesting that alot of people want the winner of the theme to pick the top 5 of the next theme.
Having been lucky enough to have won a theme contest, I must say I would not have liked that resposibility. I found it hard enough picking the next weeks theme, trying to make sure that it was a theme that would sort all types of cameras and levels of experience, and all coutries in the world. I think that no matter who picks the top 5, there will be photos that people think should be there and shouldn't be there.

Also perhaps a page that shows you the winning photo of each theme contest.
starting from week 1 of each year, so that they are all on one thread.

the idea of a notifcation if you photo makes the popular page is great.

Finally, thanks Ross for a great site
November 6th, 2010
@wndswptlady dark choc... yum...

As for 365... option to follow threads so I can see what discussions I am following and when they are updated...
November 6th, 2010
Wow, you are going to be busy Ross! Just reading all these posts took a while. I am new, so was not aware of the PP until someone told me my photo was on it, so agree with everyone on that point.

I like the simpleness of it all, and the extra bits as an ace member.

The idea of being able to search for someone is great, as well as PM. Apart from that I am enjoying being here! Thanks! :0)

Out of curiosity, how many members does 365 have?
November 6th, 2010
Thanks for a great site - I love it, my top wants would be:

- ability to search the discussion threads
- ability to order image search results by date/most recent
- PMs
- ability to search members
November 6th, 2010
@Scrivna LOVE the changes! @islawight awesome!..Exactly what I would want too.. I think we are getting it..I think we are just waiting for PM's.. hopefully we get that too!
November 6th, 2010
@Scrivna I have no idea how you'd set up or decide what "people" to put on that---but you go for it!! I really like the New Faces page. And I like that you're open to opening this can of worms...little did you know. (: Bet you're wishing for more hours in your day now, judging by the length of this thread--haha.
November 6th, 2010
@Scrivna : Hi Ross, I love the idea about the ability to send private messages. Also, just out of curiousity it would be fun to know how many current users there are on 365. I think about that sometime, too.
November 6th, 2010
@Scrivna I am writing this before reading all the posts, while I remember what I want, so some maybe duplicates. I reserve the right to add more stuff after I read the whole thread!

I would like the awards that a photo has won to be displayed on its page. Like the theme awards, the top 20, the popular page. What's the point of winning something if you can't brag about it?

Maybe a preferences button too - so we can tell the viewers that we are willing to accept critiques on the photo.

And do the above without cluttering up the page!

We need tags on the discussion or something so we can see if the question has seen asked before.

On my blog feeder, I can see how many new posts each of the blogs on my list has. It would be nice to know when my followee has a new photo posted. I like the home page, but this would help me make sure I am not missing anyone in my feeds.

I would like the option to choose a different background on my project - preferably on each page. Some of the photos would look better with a different background color.

All right, you work on those, while I read the thread. :)

Thought of one more thing, not sure if you can do anything about it. On a discussion, when you talk about somebody with the @ sign, that isn't always the same name that they regularly use, so then I don't know who you are talking about. Is there a way to mention both names, or just their "public" name, or maybe a link to their post that is being replied to?
November 6th, 2010
@maola I like Cynthia's idea about a full list of tags. (But don't limit us to using just those tags.) Besides giving us another way to look at pictures, it would also give us ideas about other tags to add, and about other photos to take!
November 6th, 2010
I think you should be able to update a status. Lets say you havn't updated 365 in a few days and people are wondering whats going on. You can simply update a status explaining where you've been. I think you should only see statuses of people you follow so they'll appear on your personal dashboard/home page/recent activity page.
November 6th, 2010
what about being able to page through the thumbnails when viewing someone's photos? not something really important since you can just go to the calendar, but i always try clicking there where there's no buttons ;)
November 6th, 2010
Awesome site, Ross! And thanks for asking for input! Some of the things I would really like:
1 -- seeing a person's location with their name
2 - From Matt Murata:
When looking at the home feed, I sometimes wish it would show just the most recent uploaded photo for a particular person. So in other words, when people haven't loaded a photo for a week and suddenly post several photos, show just the most recent with a "more" link.

3 – from Lynne Reardon
Also perhaps a page that shows you the winning photo of each theme contest. starting from week 1 of each year, so that they are all on one thread.
**but also include all 5 entries

4 – from Shelina Virjee
On a discussion, when you talk about somebody with the @ sign, that isn't always the same name that they regularly use, so then I don't know who you are talking about. Is there a way to mention both names, or just their "public" name, or maybe a link to their post that is being replied to?
November 6th, 2010
Thanks Ross - the site's addictive ! as for 'improvements" well ... ah I'll leave it to the techies :-)
November 6th, 2010
Dashboard 365 project is simply AWESOME !!I What i really-really want is to have a LIKE or UNLIKE button so i can just click or push.it..instead of writing comments to all of your 365 or more followers. This will save time, energy and we can all go to bed early, sleep tight and rest well....so that the following day we can all take a better looking picture for everyone to enjoy..:)"LIKE or UNLIKE?"
November 6th, 2010
@ingapinga there's a like button on the left hand side underneath the stats
November 7th, 2010
I'm just going to repeat what some others have already suggested that I really, really want...

* Better search capabilities. I've tried searching names of members many times and came up with nothing.

* Personal Messages. Can't begin to say how many times I've wanted to ask a question or say something personal that I didn't want everyone on 365 reading.

* Location of member. Optional, of course, but I'm so curious where people are in the world.

* The whole name not matching the @name thing... not sure what should be done but something matching the two would be so so helpful.

Thanks for everything, Ross! This place is amazing and my whole family appreciates all you have done.
November 7th, 2010
@Scrivna I know that some people wish to have an "all members" page where others can scroll thru all the members... others wish to have a location feature. my only request is that these features would have optional participation for ace members. i personally love the fact that it's somewhat hard to find a specific person on here. that means that not just anyone who overhears my name at the doctor's office, etc can get on here, and get know my story....(i mean my stuff isn't that personal, but...you know?) also, with that being said, i don't mind that people know i'm from the midwest, but that's about all the location info i'd like being shared. i say this as a paranoid, as a victim, and as a mom... thanks for taking this into consideration.
November 7th, 2010
Ross, good job on new faces.
November 7th, 2010
@Scrivna I'm liking the changes.

I have what may be an elegant solution to the PM issue, without having to create a database for it:

Simply allow a flag for comments, so that the poster (or photo-owner) can "hide" the comment from everyone other than. You could leave it show that there is a comment, but have the text convert to *hidden by owner* or *hidden by poster*, or simply just *comment hidden*, for everyone other than the owner and poster. Just a thought. @Scrivna
November 7th, 2010
The thing I've just started finding annoying is that when you're reading through a long discussion topic like this one, there are people replying to comments and it would be nice to be able to go back to view the original comment without having to scroll back through. I don't know if it would be possible to do or not, but it would be cool if you could click on the @.... bit and it takes you back to that post. it's not a major problem though, just a niggle. I really do love the site. :-)
November 7th, 2010
Nice addition to the search feature. well done.
November 7th, 2010
@Scrivna PM's would be good. Plus, the interviews were nice. But we've kind of talked about that already :-)
November 7th, 2010
i need to know about cleaning dust from inside DSLR camera. Is it really as tricky as it sounds to do yourself ? Or should i get a professional to do it ? I have found that i have dust in my camera, i only see a few spots in photos of the sky. Advice and comments will greatly be appreciated !
November 7th, 2010
Am betting @ross is REALLY GLAD he asked us. lololol.
I personally want world peace, homes for all homeless and the nat'l debt paid off.

Tomorrow is soon enough, btw! =)
November 7th, 2010
to be able to find people i know 3 others on here but can not get to them
November 7th, 2010
I' d like to see some kind of earch (or advanced search) so I can find others who started their project the same day as me.?
Just a thought
November 7th, 2010
i totally want PM's!(: just thought i'd point that out(:
November 7th, 2010
and one more thing.....a notification when someone fav's your photo.

Love 365, thanks Ross.
November 7th, 2010
@dosmanoisabel ace members get that already :-)

@ukers you can do that in the search now (although it will be improved if you're having difficulty)

@gill thanks, but we use a custom built framework here

@lauralee locations would be good yep.
November 8th, 2010
@Scrivna here is one that bugs me a little, quite often the name of the person that shows on the comments and the user name that comes up when we go to reply are totally different and or unrelated. I am easily confused at times
(age maybe)
would it be possible that both names show up next to the thumbnail picture.
November 8th, 2010
I would also like to post photos straight from my iphone.
November 8th, 2010
@girlie excellent idea Robin! I very rarely go the (or get there) and ditto for the 'sign in' page as I NEVER go there as I'm always signed in.
November 8th, 2010
A search bar for the boards so that we can find past boards?
November 8th, 2010
@eyebrows I think that's a great idea Steve. There are many pictures that should be on the popular page but the "monkeys" seem to miss. If we voted like that, then when pictures get enough votes then they would be added. So, that's my want too!
November 8th, 2010
@msk1p2 you "Vote" already, by adding it to your favourites and commenting on the photos, that's where the popular page gets its statistics from.
November 8th, 2010
I don't know if anybody already suggested this. But I would like to be able to download all my own pictures at the end of my 365 project so I can print them and have a nice photobook with my year in pictures
November 8th, 2010
A filter to turn reverse smilies (: into proper ones :)
November 8th, 2010
I miss a good search function that some have mentioned. Sometimes I remember a name or a mail nic and then I can't find that person again. Also I would like to see which of my album I'm in. Personal messages would be ok!
November 8th, 2010
- @lynne3804 I love the idea of a page that shows all theme winners.
- @ingapinga Love that like, unlike button idea...but so that it registers more clearly at the point of the photo liked.
- @vuokkovuorinnen - downloading facility so you can see your whole year sounds a great idea, as well as a slide show facility for your year.
- I would like to indicate that I welcome a critique of a particular photo. people are brilliant at saying what works and that is fabulous, but there are times when it is also helpful to know what doesn't. However, I think that this should be requested. People can find criticism hard (I do!) and should it should be an opt in.
November 8th, 2010
Ohh - and therapy for coming off 365 - Like Glynis says, it is VERY addictive. Can't stop looking at all these beautiful photos.
November 8th, 2010
Mine's more of a question ... do we see our own pictures in the "popular" page if they're selected, or only others' photos? I know it's mainly to see new folks we might not have seen before, but on the other hand, seeing one's own work there would be a nice encouragement.
November 8th, 2010
i don't know if this has been mentioned yet, i didn't have time to read through everything. however, i think it would be nice for people to be able to search users by email, name, or username. that would make finding people much easier. :)
November 8th, 2010
@nevermouse Yeah you do see your own if/when they make it :)
November 8th, 2010
@Scrivna
1. Are you offering a book of our 'year' of photos for sale at the end of our 365 photos?
2. Thank you for this site. It has really changed the way I see my every day world. I had no idea I would love photography!
November 9th, 2010
@nevermouse Yeah you do - I've been told my ics are there so have a look - sometimes you need to shuffle a few times
November 9th, 2010
AN iPHONE AP... which you can upload photos with, i dont like uploading photo via email.
November 9th, 2010
ohh and a notification if your shot makes it to 'popular' page, not sure if the new notification sysetm does this already, i havent made pop in quite a long time
November 9th, 2010
After Steve's wonderfully impressive and slightly geeky (grins) dead followers thingie, I'd like to be able to delete those followers from my follow list..
November 10th, 2010
I would like to be able to "flip" thru each picture within a theme. For example, if I go to the top and search for this week's theme, it brings up all the water2 photos. I would like to start w/ the first one and click next or whatever and go to the next water2 theme photo instead of clicking on each little thumbnail and then hitting the back button on my browser to look at the next one. Looking at just the thumbnails isn't much fun for the blind girl I am!
November 10th, 2010
I would like to see a left to right button next to the 6 images displayed below the current daily photo. Does that make sense? For example, clicking left would scroll to the past, 6 photos at a time.
November 11th, 2010
@Scrivna Still too long of a thread to read it all in detail :) Today I wanted to be able to mark a thread as interesting, to "flag"! it! Maybe it's already suggested...or have I missed the function?
December 6th, 2010
@Scrivna I could like a button where I could see a persons top rated photos, in a list as I can see my own trp! Nice way to quickly see "the best" amongst the many photos a lot of people have!
May 1st, 2011
I would like to see a "Comment" button on the button bar above the photo, next to the magnifying glass. Sometimes it takes too long to scroll down and enter the comments box when a picture is really popular, but I still want to make a comment...
May 1st, 2011
@Scrivna Ross, or anyone else on here. I've never figured this out, and perhaps there is no solution, but I try to make it a point to check all the postings and comment on the ones I follow daily. It is quite a task, but it is something I enjoy doing. When I open up the photo to the larger image, it is a little frustrating to be moved back to the very beginning of my thread and then needing to scroll through to where I was before opening the photo. Is there a way, after opening up the photo to go back to where you were? If this had been told before, I missed it, and forgive me for my ignorance. Or is that how it's set-up?
May 2nd, 2011
I admit that I only read half of these and skimmed another few... But I didn't see anyone mention the email notifications for mentions. Throughout the day I just check email to see comments on my pictures and then when I get back to the computer I have to check the notifications tab for mentions. And I'm not sure whether it is a timeframe or number of notifications thing, but on occasion I haven't been able to go back as far as the last time I checked in so if there were some people mentioning me in a comment during that gap then I'll never see it.
January 6th, 2013
NEWBIE discussion category nomination ...

Discussions appear to be flooded by Newbies testing out the waters and getting to know this site, and the Oldies being supportive whilst searching for the meaty advancing topics ... I think a NEWBIE discussion category could be a great improvement - maybe even migrate appropriate discussions there too :-D

... how about it Ross @Scrivna? :-D
