This is something I took back in April, honestly it is a pretty boring shot. Just a bee, and a blurry brown background. BUT I think insects are such a fascinating subject to shoot because of the outcome of the shoot. Insects are so small that you get details on your monitor that you can't see on your little camera screen. It is like a surprise everytime you upload your photos. I mean on my camera I thought this was out of focus and my photo excursion was a bust, but when I uploaded I noticed how clear it really was.
Flowers have always been a standby for me, the "I haven't taken a photo yet, look a pretty flower or interesting plant." I don't really like bugs but I have to admit I have taken two bug photos that I really like.
I mostly liked it because of the detail, I had never noticed how fuzzy bees were before.
And this one
I don't really consider butterflies bugs, but I guess they are. I have two of them in my project, this one being prettier. I was just in awe of the size of this one and had to photograph it.
I think in general bugs are so popular because they are so strange looking, they have interesting shapes, textures and colors.
Thanks everyone, for your replies. Those are some cool photos! Bugs look like aliens to me! Lol...but yes, they are interesting. I especially like pictures of bees.
I started this discussion because I always take note every time I look at the popular page of all the bugs and flowers on there! Does anybody else notice this? It's like, half the popular pictures are of those subjects!
flowers are popular because they're delightfully easy--they're already beautiful, you just have to capture it. i like bug photos for the opposite reason--they can be tricky, either to find like this one: or to snap at the right moment:
The easiest answer is because they are beautiful, like nature's jewelry. The deeper answer is because they are so complex to photograph. Both the flowers and the bugs.
Flowers don't just sit there, as much as people believe they do. They wave about at the slightest breeze, and you find yourself waiting patiently for them to become still again, or for the bug to come to them, or get off them. Or you wait for them to bud and open and capture them when they are crisp and fresh and before they have been some bugs meal or they have lived their cycle and begin to wither...
With bugs you are searching for them, waiting for them to come, trying to capture them in a certain pose, waiting for them to fly or hover, discovering something new to capture, creeping yourself out with the macro lense ;), following them through their life cycle, discovering new bugs you didn't know existed...
It becomes somewhat of a passion, if you can't tell, =) Hope that helps explain a little bit of why I love to photograph bugs and flowers.
They are beautiful, smell fabulous and they don't move. They are always available -if not in season go the the flower shop and buy some :D))
This is my favorite one of all times. It just pops to me and there was very little editing done to this one.
@indiannie_jones Thanks, Annie! (: I was going to reply that it was because bugs and flowers were always there and never complained about being photographed, lol.
Well, I am actually excited for the dead of winter because it will be neat to see all the ice and snow shots. I especially love birds (and other animals) in the snow.
See, I DO live in a temperate climate, so I have to rely on 365 to see some snow this winter. =D
@justkariherself That is absolutely stunning! I'm going to fave it as soon as I'm done replying here. =)
I might as well post my favorite flower/bug photo. This one by Pauline is absolutely gorgeous. I fav'd it instantly when I first saw it. Just beautiful.
Good question. I am guilty of a few "bug and flower" shots but that is mostly because whenever I find the perfect flower it always seem to have a bug or three on it. I am dreading my project in the winter because there is a distinct lack of colour.. maybe its time to get creative.
*On that subject. I really MISS malena. Her pictures and creativity always amazed me and made me smile!*.
@allegresse Thank you very much :) And I live where the land slumbers and the snow flies, so soon it will be snow pictures for me and I'll be looking for flower and bug pictures from my temperate climate couterparts!
Our winters are so long, that when spring comes and the living things wake up, I get excited and take their pictures, hoping to share the beauty. I'm sure that soon I'll be boring everyone with pictures of snow and ice!
I like to photograph flowers because they show beauty in its purest form. The bugs, well, I find them interesting. I didn't realize I caught a bug on this flower until after I reviewed it on the computer. Someone told me it was a tic, so I'm glad I kept my distance!
Oh my, bugs and flowers are about all I shoot in the summer! I raise butterflies and set 220 of them free this year. I really miss them so thank you for starting this thread. Of course I can't post them all but here are a few of my favorites.
I like to take photos of flowers (and bugs ~ sometimes) because they are simply beautiful, and all you have to do is capture that in a photograph... (or try to anyway) :)
Here is the one and only fresh flower pic on my site... (hmmm...I need to upload more...)
My picture shows why I love flower-pictures. All the details you can see trough your camera but not very well by your eyes. I really thinkt its the same by bugs. I am amazed when I see beautyfull butterflies or dragonflies like the one Katrina is showing:
I do it because flowers are beautiful and stay still. For those same reasons I never shoot real bugs!
As for flowers, well, they're always pretty :D Qai takes amazing flower shots

Here's one of my bug and flower photos:

Will we have to rely on our southern/tropical friends for those kind of images I suppose.

Here's some that I've taken:
I like this one because the flower looks like a little person reaching up . . .
Here is the one and only fresh flower pic on my site... (hmmm...I need to upload more...)
This was from back when I used to have a garden. Shooting bees was a lot of fun.
I like this collage with the vrious flowers and the one with the snail in it
